I may be about the perfect audience for this. I used to make popup cards, using cardboard, string, elastic bands, and glue or tape.
And I also I used to build Lego Transformers, so I'm well familiar with those hinge pieces. I made several that you could transform from robot to car or plane by just twiddling parts like proper Transformers. And a few years later, I drew a detailed schematic for how I'd make a remote-controlled Technic Lego Optimus Prime - as in, powered by a motor, sending power down one central axle, to accomplish all the bits of the transformation independently. Very vexingly, I never finished it.
