Four pairs of eyes were glued to the TV screen. All of them held a thin sheen of tears as the scene played out in front of them. Even after the ending music finished, none of them made any movements, instead choosing to remain seated on the floor of the eldest’s living room.
The sound of the front door could be heard and the pitter patter of feet hurriedly advancing towards them were what finally pushed them out of their stunned reverie.
“I’m so sorry I’m late!”
A rather short boy burst into the living room, out of breath after his mad dash from the train station. The boy put his hand on the door frame and leant heavily on it. His short brown-dyed hair was clinging to the damp skin of his forehead.
Frowning as he received no answer, he looked around to see his band mates were looking at him strangely with teary eyes. He blinked furiously.
“What happened?”
Concern and worry had found their way to his voice.
No one made a movement for a few seconds. Then, unexpectedly, it was the youngest - also known as the most mature - who made the first move.
That was… to stand up, close the distance between the two of them in a few strides, and engulfed the older boy in a tight hug.
The older was unable to hold in a squeak as his head was pushed onto the younger yet taller boy’s shoulder and hand started to pet his hair.
“Ryutaro?!”
The older boy pushed the younger gently away and smirked playfully.
“I knew you missed me, but I didn’t know that it was this much! What? Do you finally realize that no one can argue with you as best as I can and that I am irreplaceable?”
When the usual comeback didn’t come, the smirked was replaced with a worried frown.
“Ryutaro? What’s wrong? Everyone?”
He looked around and found that all his friends had the same solemn expression.
The lanky boy sitting at the foot of the couch abruptly stood up and, following the younger’s example, engulfed the bewildered boy in an embrace once more with a cry of “Yama-chan!”
“Okay, enough of this!”
He pushed his best friend away and ducked the hand that was about to pat his head.
“Ryutaro I can understand since it’s been a while since we last met, but you, Yuto-kun?! We were having the last of the drama shooting together only this late afternoon! What is wrong with you guys?!”
The last sentence was directed towards his band mates as he stared at them wide eyed while continued to struggle against his best friend who was very adamant about hugging him all of a sudden.
Then he caught sight of the still on television and the channel that his friends were watching and understood at once. He sighed in both annoyance and acceptance and ceased his struggling. Almost immediately, his best friend had him in his arms, clutching him tightly against his chest.
“I am so sorry…”
He sighed tiredly before moving his hand to pat the slightly younger boy on his back. Really, his friends took the scene in the drama way too seriously.
“This would be the 17th time you apologized to me about this, Yuto-kun. And yes, I really did count them. How many more times do I need to say it until you get it? It was in the script. I was not really hurt. It’s called acting. You know, the thing that we’ve done together thrice already?”
There was a strangled laugh from somewhere above him and he pushed himself away from his best friend’s hold, grinning wildly.
“Better?”
Yuto was about to answer when a blur tackled the older of the two. He let out a cry of frustration.
“What is it with you guys and hugging me?!”
The only response he got was the arms around him tightened considerably, making him fear for his ribs. There’s only so much that his ribs could take and his band mates seemed to have forgotten about it for the moment.
“Chinen, you’re going to suffocate him if you don’t let go,” Keito pointed out, eyes twinkling with mischievousness and hand edging for a cushion that was lying beside him discreetly.
The arms around him withdrew and he took a deep breath exaggeratedly, only to have a cushion smacked him soundly on his face. He automatically grabbed it in his hands, lowering it from his face slowly. His lips formed a pout as he glared at his attacker.
“You meant to do that in the first place.”
Keito only grinned at him.
“Spo- umph!”
He smiled smugly as the oldest glared at him. The offended cushion having slid down his face onto his lap.
“Now, we’re even.”
Chinen’s, Ryutaro’s and Yuto’s laughter could be heard at the background and he realized what Keito had wanted to achieve by throwing that cushion. He had succeeded too. The atmosphere was noticeably lighter than before. He was thankful for it.
Not that he was going to say that aloud.
He reached for another cushion and - hugging it to his chest - plopped down onto the soft carpeted floor.
“You really need to stop playing the role of emotionally tortured kid.”
He jumped a little as Ryutaro said that with a hint annoyance in his voice. Frowning at the youngest’s choice of words, he reached for the only full glass of juice - strawberry, he noticed. He’d need to thank Keito for remembering to buy him one later - on the table.
“I don’t remember ever played that kind of role,” he answered as he took a drink, placing the glass on the table afterwards.
A scoff came from Chinen after hearing his response.
“Right, Ryosuke. Because we know you never did.”
Chinen’s voice was dripping with sarcasm.
“It’s true!” He objected as he frowned deeper.
Keito shook his head.
“Not from what we just watched, you didn’t.”
“I have to agree with them,” Yuto said, sending him an apologetic look as he stared at him unbelievingly. “You have to admit that the look you have in the end of that episode would make anyone feels guilty. I mean, even Irie-kun immediately hugged you after the director said cut.”
He felt heat rushed up his cheeks as the memory of that shooting surfaced.
It was so very embarrassing and the stream of apologies that Yuto had said to him afterwards had only served to heighten the colour of his already pinkened cheeks.
Seriously, they needed to realize that he was acting!
He was brought back to the present when Ryutaro decided to put in his evidence.
“He played that kind of role too in the drama before this one.”
He sent a blank look towards the youngest boy and received a face palm in return.
“He meant Hidarime Tantei, Yama-chan,” Keito explained patiently. “You know, the one that have you crying every single episode.”
He was about to object when Chinen interrupted him.
“Now that I think about it, he really did play that kind of role an awful lot, didn’t he?”
The shortest boy started to count with his fingers.
“Those two dramas, then the one with Nikishido-kun, the one with Kamenashi-kun too. And - oh hell - even Tantei Gakuen Q as well!”
He massaged his temple to fight the incoming headache he was about to have.
“Seriously, Chinen? Which part of Amakusa Ryuu is mentally tortured?”
Chinen raised an eyebrow at him.
“You do realize that Amakusa Ryuu is the heir to an evil organization? How can anyone not pressurized with that?”
He was about to answer when an unwelcomed - familiar, yes, but unwelcomed for the moment - interrupted him. It was the voice of their group ‘mother’.
“Well~ Considering that he looks extremely adorable when he was distressed, I couldn’t blame the director.”
Five pair of glaring eyes immediately averted their gaze to the door.
True to their thought, there were five boys - oh, well, four young men and one boy - standing and grinning at the entrance to the room.
“You guys are unwelcomed. Shoo! Shoo!” Chinen gestured wildly from where he was seated, attempting to scare the older boys away. The problem was, the sight was more comical than scary.
“And why is that?” Hikaru asked amusedly.
“Uhm…” The five seated boys looked at each other, not knowing what to say.
“We don’t have extra mug for you guys,” Ryutaro finally said, the other 7 members nodding frantically to support their band mates.
“You already used that reason the last time we crashed into your sleepover, Ryutaro,” Daiki chuckled.
“Yes, we are prepared now,” Takaki grinned and almost as one, BEST members held up their respective mugs to show their younger band mates.
“We don’t have enough snacks,” Ryosuke blurted out the next thing that entered his mind.
“Easily solved too,” Inoo sang and, grinning madly, fished a few bags of chips and cookies from his bag and waved them around as if to show them off.
Ryosuke and Keito looked as if they were about to back down at the prospect of more snacks, but Yuto quickly whacked them both at the back of their heads.
“Pigs,” he muttered under his breath, but still loud enough so that the duo could hear him. The two flashed him a sheepish smile before turning to look at the group still standing by the door who was conversing animatedly with the two youngest in their sub-group.
Oh well, not quite conversing.
Chinen and Ryutaro were throwing reason after reason why the older group shouldn’t crash in their sleepover and BEST were deflecting their reasons by showing item after items that they said.
How BEST could fit them all in their bags was beyond them.
“You guys are amazingly persistent,” Chinen pouted and crossed his arms, to which BEST only grinned.
“Why do you want to join us anyway?”Ryutaro asked, frowning. “You could have your own BEST sleepover and leave us alone to have our sleepover.”
“Which, if I remember correctly, you guys always interrupt before they even started!” Yuto exclaimed exasperatedly while throwing his hands up.
The BEST members only grinned wickedly.
“Glad to be of service,” Hikaru state with an extravagant bow.
“How do you know when we are having sleepover anyway? I thought we did it discreetly enough,” Ryosuke frowned at the older boys.
Yabu started to make a ‘tutt’ing noise and shook his head, as if disappointed, “You should have known by now that you guys stand no chance against us.”
“Oh, yeah we do alright,” Keito muttered in annoyance around his glass, drinking his orange juice immediately afterwards.
“So~?” Inoo asked with the grin still plastered on his face. The younger group scowled at his cheerfulness.
“Yes, yes. You guys can join us,” Keito stated with a heavy sigh.
BEST let out a cheer at that.
“But!” Ryutaro interrupted loudly. “But, only this time. And only if you promise not to crash in our next sleepover.”
The rest of 7 members murmured and nodded their agreement and as one gave the older group stern looks. It did not quite work though, seeing as BEST only looked amused.
Ignoring the looks they were given in purpose, the older boys finally stepped into the room and carelessly threw their bags at one corner of the room.
“And you guys are supposed to be our role models,” Chinen shook his head with a heavy sigh, eying the mess that were BEST’s bags disdainfully.
“Of course, Chinen. You should relax a little, you know. This being a sleepover and all,” Takaki grinned mischievously.
He got a growl from the small boy in reply, which didn’t stop until a hand patted his head. Chinen turned in time to see Yabu-kun flopped down beside him.
“Ignore him, Chinen. Yuya just didn’t know how to grow up.”
Takaki spluttered in indignation as the rest of them laugh at his expense.
“Oh, well,” Ryosuke said as the laughter died down. “We might as well enjoy this get-togetherness. Since we’re all here anyway.”
“I know!” Hikaru suddenly exclaimed and rushed to his bag, digging around to find something. The others were exchanging bewildered looks. “Ta-da!”
That two syllabus caused various reactions from the nine boys, seeing what was held by the joker.
Yabu and Inoo face-palm themselves, Chinen smirked devilishly, Ryosuke and Ryutaro - for once ignoring their differences - huddled closer together and hugged the pillow to their chest tighter, Keito and Takaki paled, Yuto raised an eyebrow in disbelief, and Daiki sighed tiredly.
“ ‘Before you die, you see the ring…’ ” he said with the creepiest voice he could muster, shaking the DVD in his hands.
“Hikaru, there are kids in here!” Inoo exclaimed exasperatedly.
“Hey! I want to watch!” Chinen shouted indignantly.
“NO!” Four voices yelled in protest.
“Oh, come on Ryo-chan, it would be fun!” Chinen poked at his chubby cheek.
“No! Not happening!”
Hikaru smirked evilly and sauntered off to the DVD player, “Well, too bad then. Because I got into so much trouble finding it, so we are going to watch it. Deal with it.”
“I’m out of here!” Ryutaro exclaimed and moved to stand up, only to be pulled back by the joker and forced to sit back down, arm trapped by the older boy in a death grip.
“Don’t think so, little hamster. Somebody grabbed Yama-chan before he tried to escape!”
Yuto immediately latched onto the older boy, whom he managed to hold onto despite the older’s protest and struggle.
“How about it, Keito, Yuya? You guys up to it?” Hikaru turned to the duo while still holding a struggling Ryutaro. Both of them are pale, but nodded nonetheless.
Then, the movie started.
Ryutaro froze while Ryosuke stop struggling and latched onto Yuto instead.
Keito and Takaki gulped and simultaneously reached for spare pillows.
Hikaru and Chinen couldn’t stop smirking.
Daiki reached for a box of pocky, his free hand patting Ryosuke’s head mindlessly.
Inoo settled beside the penguin, stealing some pocky when Daiki was not watching.
Yabu just shook his head at his band mates’ antics and settle to watch the movie. He was immune to it,since Hikaru had forced him to watch it with him dozens of times already.
