The Perfectly Symbolic Fourth

The Fourth of July is but a symbol,1 albeit one with different meanings to different individuals. Sure, we wave our miniature American flags2, chant U-S-A, and engage in all manner of xenophobic tendencies, but still, I've always found the symbolism lacking. Left around 6:15. But then, as I reached Greenlake on my run that evening, I had an impulse to watch the fireworks, so I changed my route and ran back down to Gasworks. Got there just in time for the show.

Evan and I ate watermelon in the eastern bloc. Ironically, fireworks WERE shot off on July 5th (July 4th in the states!) at about 2am when we were camping outside of Sozopol, Bulgaria.
