Oh, this is absolutely wonderful! The psychic attack sounds terrifying -- actually, it sounds autistic, but that's just me! -- and I like the whole thing about Barbara being the one to fall prey to it because she's so strong. I like the idea that Ian's calm mind is the most soothing influence while Susan has to be sent away. (Love to know how she took that...)

But most of all I love those vague little hints about the Doctor's family. All that had me bouncing in pleasure, particularly “It was my daughter - Susan’s mother.” He cackled suddenly. “That surprises you, yes? You’ve wondered, the pair of you, haven’t you? What happened to her parents? Well, I’m not going to tell you. That’s none of your business. That's so very Doctor-ish!

Erm, you might want to go back and add that extra 'u' in 'pursuing', as 'pursing' more than just friendship seems a bit odd... :)

*blushes* Aww, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I actually really enjoyed writing it and was (mostly) pleased with the outcome, so it's nice that that was validated.

I have my own theories about the Doctor's past, it's the one bit of self-created fanon I stick to.

I'm curious in which context the attack seems autistic. I mean, I certainly didn't write it that way, but I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

And as for pursuing...whoops!

Well, I resolutely stick to mine, so more power to you! Incidentally, have you ever noticed that Old School fans are far more likely to make Susan the Doctor's maternal granddaughter? If the new fans reference it, it seems a fairly equal mix of son/daughter, but "daughter" seems to be the consensus of about 85 to 90% among fans of the old series. I've noticed this in fanfic for about ten years now.

Oh, that would be the bit about everything being "so loud it hurt" as the attendant sensory issues with autistics make colours brighter, textures more pronounced, and sounds louder than they are to the average person. A loud sound that would just be a bit annoying to most people is excruciating to us! I daresay you're going to come across this at some point as a teacher.

Yeah, I've already had a few kids with aspergers (four, I think), but none yet who are autistic. I'm sure it's only a matter of time, though. But when I was writing that scene I was trying to think of the best way to describe being attacked and all I could think of was noise that hurts your ears, like a high pitched whine (not all the different from the sound some children are capable of that makes you wants to claw your ears off).

I can't speak for old schoolers, being a brand nooB and all, but I always saw the Doctor as having a daughter. Maybe it's all tied into the fact that the only paternal relationship we saw was with Susan. Perhaps it's to do with the fact that most fanficcers are female (though that would be a trait I'd be more likely to associate with new schoolers). I guess we can just attribute it to some grand fanon scheme, because if we knew for a fact, I'm sure someone would have sung it from the treetops by now.

This is very nicely done - everyone's really in character, and Ian is absolutely adorable. Nice bits of background for the Doctor as well! Lovely work.

Thanks again for participating in the ficathon!

Sorry, I so meant to comment on this sooner. But my recent Big Finish audio fad has apparently dragged me kicking and screaming back into my long-dormant Six/Mel obsession. (I mean, honestly, it's like I'm 15 all over again...)

Er, anyway...

Well, I hope this fulfills the conditions!

Totally! A worried, angsty and wee bit manic Ian is exactly what I wanted from this... and is exactly what I got. Thank you!

Panicked!Ian is teh cute. Some of my favorite Ian/Barbara moments are those when Barbara is in danger and Ian just spazzes out. ;)

Well, I'm glad you liked it! Because that was kinda the whole point! ;)

And panicked!Ian, he was fun to write. All twitchy because Barbara had been hurt. So much fun! :)

And I completely understand being lost in another fandom for a while, I've just recently discovered Farscape...
