WTH?

I sent out an email to our membership last weekend, reminding them of our upcoming dinner & meeting this Thursday. I said, "Just a reminder that dinner reservations for our February 21 meeting must be in by this coming Wednesday, February 13. Lucy needs to get the final count to the caterer on Thursday morning ( Read more... )

It's funny how many people are careless about names, as if our identities aren't very important. I've never understood that.

My own name, for example, people feel the need to shorten. This seem to think that just because my name is Elisabeth that it's ok to call me Liz. It's not ok, people! If you call me Liz, I will probably immediately dislike you! If you can't be bothered calling me a nine letter name, then ask if I have another, for heaven's sake! Oh, and newsflash - there isn't a Z in my name!

Oh, that felt good! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to rant. :)

LOL, rant away.

I try not to be oversensitive about, and I've almost gotten used to the fact that for some reason, several people I've met have called me "Karen" when they met me again later -- I've decided that the two K names must be stored next to each other in our brains somehow, LOL. And I certainly wouldn't think much of it if someone who'd only heard my name called me Cathy. But when you've seen my name written every month for a few years in your organization's newsletter? When I send out emails at least a couple times a month to the membership that have my name prominently displayed in the From box, not to mention the signature area? When we've exchanged personal email at least a few dozen times over the last few years? Then not remembering is just plain lazy.

*joins you in the ranting chair* ;)

That's annoying.

On a side note, I have a friend who spells her name Kathy, but Catherine when writing it in full.

You know what's funny? I have a friend here in town who is the same way. She is Catherine, but goes by Kat. It's odd, no question, and led to a conversation about it when we first met. But you know, I took the time to ask which she prefers (Kat, with the K) and have made sure to incorporate it into my memory banks. I mean, isn't the polite thing to do?

she has someone very close to her who is a Cathy-with-a-C and has become so used to spelling it that way

Yes, I had the same theory. And it's a common name, at least for our age group (interestingly, you don't hear of many elementary age kids with that name these days; it must be "out" at the moment.) Next time I talk to her, I should work in a casual question about what her kids' names are. Watch, one of them will be Cathy. *g*

I had an algebra teacher in high school who called me "Beth" for the entire year. LOL! That's so funny because your name isn't anywhere even close! (At least, not the name I know you by ... for all I know, that could be a screen name, too, and your name is something different for both Beth and that one. *g ( ... )

I will admit, for a second I wondered how your roommate could misspell "Brown"...silly me. :)

And sheesh, I can understand getting it wrong if you've only ever heard it, but after years? And in reply to an email that contains it?

/me thwaps her with a dead trout
/me thwaps her again for being late for the deadline with no apology

I mean, people misspell my name all the time - but it's almost always people who've never seen it. On the other hand, even people who've seen it like to pronounce it wrong (:glares at teachers over the years:) - dude, it's spelled phonetically! It's not that hard! Not-super-common, I will admit, but not hard!

(Although, speaking of spellings of Kathy - my sis had a friend in high school who spelled it "Cathe" - I always wanted to call her "Cath".)

ROTFL! Luckily, it's not quite as bad as that, since my maiden name is Polish, starting with a Z and ending with a "ski", and that combination always freaks people the hell out. *g* But seriously, it's not that hard of a name once you see it. I can't count the number of people that would give a panicked blink when they heard it, then relax and say, "Oh, it's just like it sounds!" when they'd see it written out.

Oh, sheesh! See, I hate creative spellings of names. And that one takes me back to 2nd grade and the big argument I had with a boy in my class who smugly insisted that I didn't know how to spell my own name, because it was obviously supposed to be spelled Kathe, and didn't I know what sound the "y" made? I remember explaining it to him, then arguing with him, then finally walking away with an "You're so ( ... )
