Just a few quick comments in response - got A and El staying with me at the moment :))))

1 - I wondered about that too ;)

2 - I believe that Jack's memories will be visited this year; I vaguely remember someone saying something about that being planned for DW. Though I could be wrong, as I avoid most DW spoilers and certainly any episode-specific ones.

3 - I agree with every word re. Martha. I really liked her in this, loved the references to The Year that Never Was, but am puzzled by the timeline here. And everyone accepts her instantly? Admittedly, with everything else they're dealing with they probably didn't want to throw in conflict between characters as well, but it did make her look a bit too perfect. But, hey, she acted as a catalyst for Tosh and Owen to make a move! (Though poor Tosh. How many more times will people she loves die?)

4 - dark_aegis tells me that this is 'novel canon', but it's definitely fascinating to see it crop up on TV. Now, whether it'll emerge in DW too remains to be seen; while we're getting lots of DW ( ... )

do you remember Ianto's comment last year that gloves always come in pairs? I'm wondering how significant that is, particularly in the light of a very brief glimpse of a metal glove during the trailer for next week. ;)

Ooo, I didn't watch the trailer that closely. I did notice, though, that they never actually cut Owen up ... it's more like "Look, here we are, about to perform an autopsy ... cue foreboding music." Gee, wonder why we're supposed to be worried that they might actually cut him open? *g* (Though I'm not quite sure why they need to do an autopsy in the first place. It's not like there's any question about why he died, so unless they think he's an alien that needs to be studied ... er, wait, maybe that's why he's had a personality transplant this season! *bg*)

1. Good point. I'm guessing that the TW team's opening of the rift at the end of Season 1 is still having an effect. I've heard that Rose is supposed to return for the final few episodes of DW, and I think Jack will be in them too. We know that Martha is joining the Doctor again halfway through the season. Given that Rose has been working for alternate-world-Torchwood, it seems likely that they're going to have something to do with her return (I don't think Rose will appear on TW-- just that there will be some connection ( ... )

Now that she's earthbound again, that dynamic has been reversed with most people-- now Martha is the one who knows more than most of the people around her, and that would, I think, result in greater confidence.

You know, I like that theory. I think that's a good point, that her confidence has grown, not just because of the specific things she's learned while away, but because she's developed wisdom and a broader view of things, which translates into a different perspective. I still think the timeline is screwed up because, while Martha may have taken her exams and thus legally be a doctor, she hasn't had time to do any type of residency, which means she has very little field experience. But then again, I can buy the idea that six months with UNIT could be more valuable than a year of hospital residency. Not three years of hospital residency, which a doctor in the US would need before striking out on their own, but enough to give Martha enough knowledge to bullshit her way into Torchwood. ;)

I'm pretty sure that you're supposed to do some form of internship/residency in Britain as well, but like you, I just assumed that UNIT was willing to take care of that side of her training. Furthermore, UNIT would be interested in her, not only because of her medical training, but also because she has the rather rare experience of time and space travel-- given that, I don't think that UNIT would want to wait three years while she completes a traditional residency; they'd want her on the ground as soon as possible.

About no. 2:

THANK GOD I wasn't the only one who thought Martha went "too perfect" in that episode. Like, I get the reversing dynamics that lefaym was talking about but it was such a leap! And all the Doctor who forum threads were like "martha ftw!" so I didn't want to say anything for fear of being slapped silly. but i thought the exact same thing.

Ditto!! I keep seeing all these squee's over how awesome Martha was, and while I definitely like TW Martha better than the love-sick DW Martha, I kept quirking an eyebrow at the screen saying, "OK, so who's the writer that put in the Mary Sue?" *bg*

What I do like about Martha on TW, though, is that she seems to bring out the happy in Jack. :) He's so much more fun when he's flirty and laughing, so anything Martha can do to bring that out, I'm there. :)
