A real-life update (what a concept!)

Jul 10, 2008 22:32

LJ has exploded this week and I'm not even going to admit to how many hours I've spent reading fic. The sheer quantity is mind-boggling, but the quality is even more so. I can't believe how quickly people are writing such outstanding stuff ( Read more... )

Nice icon. *g*

I've spent far too much of this morning making animated!kiss icons. *sigh* My icon page has been over run!

Oh, man, the icons are addicting! I did a big clear out of some of my old ones so I could get new ones ... and I'm finding myself with an embarrassing number of variations on the theme. *g* Makes me happy, though ... just look at them! So beautiful!

Fantastic! Hope all goes well for you - and Washington DC for a year! Brilliant!

Yeah, the sheer quantity of fic's been... astounding. There has been some good stuff among it, but frankly I've just been struck by how awful some of it is, particularly those where Rose is written as some spoilt brat who treats Doctor2 like dirt, or those where the author takes out her own frustrations about the ending and pretty much bashes the half-human Doctor through the entire fic. I've got to the point where I'm only clicking on fic by authors whose work I know and trust.

Ah well. Give it a few weeks and people will have settled down!

I think I've been lucky because I've come across a lot of good quality stuff. Not all of it, obviously, but I'm reading almost exclusively off my flist and shipping communities, and only going to T&C if there's a rec. (Plus I'm careful about scanning the first few paragraphs and if it's clearly not up to snuff, I click back out. There's simply too much to read to waste time on drek ( ... )

Yeah, I've seen some good fics from authors like orange_crushed and a really nice one last night from rachelwarren. Others... well, let's say I've been disgusted by a couple, including one author who managed to kill Ten2 off in the first couple of paragraphs, another who had Rose make a clone of herself so she could skip off back to the other universe, and a third who dumped Donna in the parallel universe instead of Rose. Right - so it's not okay to leave Rose there, when all her family's there and the Doctor who loves her enough to tell her so is, but it's fine to abandon Donna there when everything she knows is in the other universe?

Ah well. I tell myself things will calm down in a few weeks, and those of us who recognise the wonderful possibilities this new ship gives us will start dreaming up even better fic :)

ETA: Actually, reading upthread, why don't you post your recs on your LJ? I'm sure others would be interested too, and we should all be doing our bit to promote non-bashing fic :)

This is an incredibly good idea, and I wish I had the time to do it! Right now, I'm up to three full emails worth of links that I've sent to her, so I'm probably drive everyone crazy by posting them, LOL. But if I find the time this week between packing and everything else, I will certainly see about trying to format a rec list to post. :)

I grew up in Arlington. I hope you'll be very happy the year you are there. They had an excellent public school system - I hope you'll find that still to be the case.

They still do indeed have a great school system -- I did a lot of research that that's the one I narrowed it down to as our preference. Not that others in the area aren't great, too, but it just seemed to have the best mix of offerings, while not being so huge that you feel lost.

Thanks!
