Moving yesterday made me realize that there will probably be a time where moving all of my music, books, and movies will consist of picking up a harddrive, or at worst, a handful of feather-light devices. This is cool, but part of me likes having bookshelves full of books ( Read more... )

I really, really want to believe there will always be bookshelves full of books.

I can believe that books will be around for awhile, but music and movies in individual packaging/physical form are already on their way out. I say good riddance. I hate having a bunch of CDs/DVDs. My one worry is that too much good overlooked stuff will be lost in the transfer.

I too have no problem with the extinction of CDs and DVDs, but that's simply digital media finding a more proper and efficient home. As with books, I don't want records to go away. Analog sound is important!

You can judge me by the images/sounds on my floor-to-ceiling billion pixel mood wall.

In regards to your second paragraph, I think you can look in our house and know how we feel. How we feel is "exactly."

For some reason, the 'owning lots of books' thing just doesn't appeal to me.  It's odd -- I do read a fair amount, but I've been slowly whittling down my book collection over the years.  *shrug*  Maybe it's that I was raised by packrats, and now I get twitchy if I start accumulating too much stuff.

In any case, I do not begrudge other people their libraries -- ease-of-judgment-passing etc.

If you are in need of divesting yourself of good books, let me know and I will give them a home!

I keep wanting to ditch all my books and go digital, but I can't. The music and movies and whatever media going on disk, yeah, awesome - let me watch or listen to whatever whenever without having to deal with physical media. But even though I do most of my reading online already, and have a kindle and everything, I just find that I enjoy reading much more with a physical book.

My two big excuses for maintaining a biggish library (aside from the "hey! people can look at my bookshelves and judge me!" part) are reference browsing, and being able to let my kid sit in a room full of books and swim through them. My dad had one room that was just a big library when I was a kid (he was a librarian, of course), and I would just spend all day in there looking through stuff. I don't see how that experience can be replicated digitally, without going into Neruromancer fantasyland.
