I reccomend painting up a couple and borrowing or buying Trukks and playing Gorkamorka, relatively quick and comedically violent.

It's the "painting" part I'm a bit off about. What colours would be recommended (if they're in the Codex, then I'll find that bit in a moment)? Do I need some kind of spraypaint? What brushes are required?

It's a whole new world of obsession... :(

Haha, I used to do that. You need spraypaint to base coat the models. That normally means either black or white, probably black for orks but it depends on your colour scheme. If in doubt, use white. It's not essential, but your model will look a lot better, with smoother colours. You should get some ideas for colouring from the Codex. The type of brush isn't too important but it should be fairly small with a well-defined tip for detail. Multiple brushes is a bonus.

Marks Models is good for modelling implements, and for the love of criminey buy tape measures in hardware shops. The mark-up is not 7000%.
