I liked it more that I expected, but I Robert Downey Jr doesn't look even remotely like the Holmes Canon describes. And while I sort of expected it I thought the "action hero" bit was overplayed. Of course Homes looks like Jeremy Brett in my brain though so YMMV.

But ITA on Irene Adler. the actress looked much too young for the part IMO!

I'm a Jeremy Brett for the screen (big or small) and a Laurie R. King & Conan Doyle for the novels woman myself.

Everything I read about the "new" version says that it's not the Holmes we know, which means, IMO, that it isn't Holmes at all.

It's not the Holmes of the books, no. But given that they made it very plain from the outset that they were reimagining the character as an action hero, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of little touches from the books. Taken purely as its own animal, I enjoyed it a great deal.
