Brief Memo

Oct 28, 2009 08:53

Dear Everybody:

I don't care who you are or what prejudice you're talking about. IT IS NOT THE LAST "ACCEPTABLE" PREJUDICE. Please adjust your prose writing styles accordingly.

Luv,

Kcatalyst

Oh, good lord. People are... inexcusably unobservant.

qwrrty has it. Here is an example of it used in a book title. I've also heard the sentiment that "the last acceptable prejudice in advertising is men" (as in, it's still okay to mock men for their stupidity, boorishness, or other stereotypes of masculinity).

I try to think of it as muleheaded optimism ...

Or stupidity. Depending on how much I've had to drink.

Drinking! Drinking would totally help me cope with people doing that. Also on that list: using Black people as the gold standard of oppression, ESPECIALLY when the point is to enhance "your" pet prejudice by pointing out how good Black people have it relative to whoever you're more interested in talking about. What IS it with people?

I have most often heard the phrase used by white male grumpy wingnuts complaining about how oppressed they are and the New York Times somehow fails to be doing a damned thing about it, or something.

Petulance is a bitch.

The last acceptable prejudice is the prejudice against people who use the phrase "last acceptable prejudice" unironically.

Right?? I mean how long have people been using that phrase? About how many different things?

I'll confess I've only heard it to refer to the massive prejudice against us white men. You're stealing my country!

So innocent! I've heard it used recently for: gay men and lesbians; transfolk; white men; men in general; fat people; linguistic discrimination. And that's only off the top of my head.

say it, sister! I've probably done that myself and it still drives me nuts whenever I see people doing it.
