Danielle was holding onto his hand for dear life. Sterling could almost feel the bones of his fingers rubbing against one another, popping in protest as they were squeezed together. Despite this he was not going to leave her side. Honestly, the pain in his hand was the furthest thing from his mind at the moment. His pain was nothing compared to the pain that she was going through.
“Push!” the doctor urged Danielle as he gazed between her parted legs.
Groaning loudly from the pain, Danielle bared her teeth and pushed harder. She was already exhausted from being in labor for five hours and her body was drenched in sweat from her efforts. Reaching over with his free hand he wiped some of the salty liquid away.
“She’s crowning,” the doctor announced to his team causing Sterling to look up abruptly. His baby was coming! Their baby was coming! Matilda was going to have little sister to play with now.
He did not pay attention to the hustle and bustle of the doctors and nurses but both Dani and Sterling were both quiet when Josephine was finally within their sights. They had decided to name her after Sterling’s mother. Moving his eyes away from the beautiful baby girl to his wife who was smiling joyfully as her olive green eyes followed the baby, his heart skipped a few beats and he felt a bit breathless. This was how things should have been before. Things had gone right this time. Matilda had a mother, he wasn’t lonely, and now they had a new addition to their family, it was like a dream.
“That’s our baby,” her tired voice stated as she moved her eyes to his. Cupping her jaw with both his hands he leaned down to kiss her forehead, nose, and lips.
“She’s beautiful, just like you.”
