Character Background: In 1519 Spain, Miguel and his partner Tulio are rather successful con-men, just about to win their rigged dice game. Their luck is so good that their opponent is left with no choice but to bet his last possession-a map to the fabled city of El Dorado. Tulio is hesitant, but Miguel convinces him to go for it, and of course they win. However, the other player proves they were using loaded dice, and the partners are forced to mock fight to get away.
The mock-fight is successful, however it leads them face-to-horns with an angry bull who chases them through the city. They’re forced to jump off a wall into two barrels. Sure, they land safely, but this small victory is difficult to enjoy considering they’re immediately carried onto a ship leaving for the new world. After hours of trying to escape, they finally burst forth and are immediately thrown into the brig for stowing away.
Thanks to a helpful horse, the duo escape the brig and steal a rowboat. Unfortunately, they lose all their provisions and are near death within days. Luckily, after some embarrassing and vaguely bicurious remarks, their boat finds land and the men and their horse rejoice. Miguel, having somehow saved the map instead of food, realizes that this beach is the first step in their finding El Dorado. After some more crafty convincing, Tulio decides that they should indeed go looking for it.
One Elton John montage later, the duo arrive at the final landmark on the map. Having apparently not found the city of gold, Tulio berates Miguel and the two prepare to head back to shore. Just as they turn to leave, a native girl appears, fleeing two armed guards. She attempts to pass her stolen items off to Tulio and Miguel, but in the end her efforts are pointless as the guards capture them all.
They are taken through a waterfall and into the city of El Dorado, where they are received as literal gods. A well-timed volcanic eruption “proves” them, and the chief and high priest provide them with private quarters. Chel, the girl from earlier, catches them discussing how they’ll use their ruse to collect as much gold as possible before absconding back to Spain. For a moment the boys try to deceive her, but Miguel, disappointingly, cannot actually summon lightning. It’s a good thing she just wants in on their plan.
Now a three-man(?) band, Tulio cautions Miguel to treat their newcomer with respect. Or, well, he tells her not to bang her. Same thing. That night, they attend a lively party in their honor, and the next morning are awoken to a lovely sacrifice. Miguel and Tulio don’t take as kindly to it as Tzekel Kan may have liked, but their positions as gods allow them to opt for the chief’s tribute instead. Lots and lots of gold are obviously preferable, at least until it starts getting thrown into the whirlpool far below. Chel intervenes, and soon they are able to gloat freely over the gold in their private quarters.
However, the low profile thing is going to be difficult to keep up over an extended period of time, so they boys commission a boat for their early departure. In the meantime, Miguel wants to go exploring, but Tulio tells him not to. Chel encourages Miguel, saying she’ll “distract” Tulio while he’s gone. Miguel, in yet another montage, falls in love with the city and its people.
Sadly, this somehow leads to Tzekel Kan arranging a sports match for them, so perhaps Tulio was right. The two are basically demolished until an armadillo gets switched out for the ball, and even then they just barely win. Tzekel Kan offers the opposing team as a sacrifice, but Miguel, in a fit of god-like rage, refuses, saying there will no longer be any sacrifices. Tzekel Kan concedes, but only because he’s noticed that Miguel is bleeding-proving they are not gods.
Later on, the chief shows Miguel the nearly-finished ship. Miguel attempts to criticize it, hoping to have an excuse to stay, and the chief knowingly offers him the opportunity should he wish it. If it weren’t for Tulio fawning over Chel and saying “forget Miguel” he may have stuck to the plan, but as it is his mind is apparently made up for him.
Tzekel Kan, meanwhile, has conjured up a giant jaguar statue that he can control, which he uses to attack the false-gods. The partners are forced to mock fight again, although this time the fighting is a little more real than last time, but at least it ends with them punching Tzekel Kan in the face. Having disposed of the bad guy, Miguel announces he is going to stay in El Dorado.
As Tulio prepares to leave and the two of them very pointedly do not say goodbye, Tzekel Kan encounters Cortez and offers to lead him back to back to the city. The chief is alerted and a decision has to be made. Tulio, always with the plans, decides to sacrifice his ship full of gold to block off the entrance to the city. The columns crumble too fast, and Miguel jumps onto the boat, pulling the sail down and saving the day (if not the gold). Tulio points out that if he stays on the boat he’ll never see the city again, but Miguel would rather go with Tulio in the end.
Having crashed on the other side of the waterfall, Miguel, Tulio, Chel, and Altivo witness Tzekel Kan’s failure to escort Cortez into the city. For a moment they lament the loss of their gold, as well as their lack of a map or a plan, but Chel encourages them to keep adventuring anyhow, and then sort of steals their horse.

Third-Person Sample:
Miguel quite liked new places, of course, but he liked them better when he had someone watching his back. Tulio’s disappearance was more troubling than he liked to admit, although he knew himself well enough and he was positive he’d be tearful whenever their reunion did happen. But in order for that to happen, Miguel had to find him, or vice versa, and after a few days in this…place…he’s yet to see or hear any sign of him. Or Chel. Or Altivo.
He’d be lonely if it weren’t for all the people. Miguel’s had a wonderful time meeting them, even if some of them seem to be a little more hostile than others. Not to mention the people with horns-he has to wonder what that’s all about. But, for the time being, he was going to put all his efforts towards finding Tulio. He’d find out what a n00b was later.
This plan was not going to be easy if he kept running into those people in his search, though. Perhaps this was why Tulio was the one who made the plans. Surely if Tulio were here, they’d have some way to talk to these people-or were they creatures? Miguel was left with the only option of ducking into the nearest open door, just barely escaping another bizarre encounter with the girl(?) with the red mask.
Maybe if he had planned better, he could have avoided walking directly into the shouty-man’s room. Still, an escape is an escape, right?
First-Person Sample:
[The video turns on to show two big blue eyes staring into the camera.]
Is it-ah, are you--? [He backs away, staring uncertainly. Sure, he’s had this thing explained to him, but that doesn’t mean he totally understands it yet.]
I, uh, I was told I could use this-it? She? Anyway, I was told I could use this to talk to people, and seeing as there seems to be more people here than I first thought, well…
If anyone could tell me where my friends are, that would be much appreciated. Their names-well, perhaps they’ve, ah-- [Oh, whoa is the life of a conman. If they changed their names he’d hate to blow their cover…] One’s a man, dark hair, ah, about this tall…[He goes on to describe
Tulio,
Chel (and her assets), and
Altivo.]
I’m sure they were brought in with me, so just send them to me and we will be right on our way. [Slightly desperate smile.]
