One of the things that impressed me with Jackie when I first met her almost two years ago, was her blog Interactive Reader where she reviewed young adult novels. I can't say that I was very interested in this subject of hers back then, but I sure was awed by the fact that publishers were sending her multiple books a month ... free ... before they ( Read more... )

Even that barely even has any power over me anymore. It's nice, but you get this feeling of obligation. I'd rather get the books from the library and read, and review, only what I want to.

Sure, I can understand that for books. But translate that into other types of critical blogging. Movie reviewers get to see movies early. Restaurant reviewers get to go to restaurants before they open. And so forth and so forth. And for each of those, I'll take it no matter if I had planned to go see it or eat there on my own.
