a parent missing a parent-teacher conference isn't even necessarily a bad parent. they could be a parent who needs to conserve their sick/vacation days from work (if they have any), or a parent who is disabled, or a parent who does not have an easily available ride to the school.

really, the amount of "i'm tougher on the poor than you are" coming from the right reeks of the "tough of crime" bullshit that didn't work on crime. it's not going to work on poverty, either. Amazingly enough, the best cure for both of these things is a good economy.
