So, there was this discussion about Supernatural courtesy of sci_fi_shipper and it opened up a portal to how I watch TV, which as it turns out is kind of the crux of all the TV thoughts I was going to share with you all.

Here goes... )

Interesting.

Total random pondering: I wonder if Watson is somehow standing in for the female component in Sherlock for you?

Honestly, Watson has the role that is generally relegated to even those strong female characters. The second in command, the push and pull between the two characters, etc.

It's not a perfect analogy, but it makes me curious.

You're on to something with why I enjoy Sherlock despite the lack of female-ness. Watson definitely fills that gap. As proven really by my enjoyment of Elementary which has recast John Watson as Joan. this creates an even more interesting relationship in the modern era because it's close and companionable, but not at all overt romantic despite being a male/female relationship. (I'm sure there are shippers out there, but that tension is not being written into the show if you ask me, and I find it right refreshing.)

There is also, usually, a character I identify with strongly. I can't think of an example where this character is not female. In fact, I usually call this character My Girl. ;) Kara Thrace from BSG and Willow from Buffy are the most notable. (And the most opposite, which is interesting.) I like it when that happens, but it doesn't happen very frequently to be honest. I think I have really high standards for kick-ass female characters. They need to not only be kick-ass, but also need to have a sense of humor and manage to show that they are not emotionless robots. Every once in awhile, someone shows up like that on a TV show, but if I only watched shows looking for that character then I would watch a lot less TV. (And I watch A LOT of TV ( ... )

BSG is actually my perfect example of watching through a character/POV. My Girl was Kara (I identify with her too an almost embarrassing level) and I shipped Kara and Lee from the mini-series (and my husband is so Lee that it's nearly comical). Season Four was and still is a exercise in torture for me. BSG as I knew and liked it ended when Kara died, and I've spent most of the last three years trying to come terms with that. hee ( ... )
