It gets better. And I think if it gets a second season that has a chance to be geneuinely good. I mean, Buffy S1 was not a shining example of TV. If I hadn't started with S2 I wouldn't have loved it. And Arrow which I am really enjoying in S2, I watched with spotty success in S1. I'm going to back now that I like it. I don'no... I don't give up easily.
Too much TV I do like for me to keep trying. I usually give something a three-episode try for it to hook me, but after trying and failing three times to watch it, I just gave up. I'll probably watch it at some point, when it's done and the whole series is on DVD or streaming.
I LOVED Buffy from the very first ep - it was such cracky fun, yet took on some serious friendship issues, and I just dug it, totally. That season I watched Buffy and Dawson's Creek, two "teen" shows for which I was NOT in the demographic, and loved them both. Let's see, 1997, I was 32, so definitely not a teen.
Another Whedon thing, Firefly, I hated when I first watched it. Then I watched Serenity and loved that, decided I had to go back and watch the series, and loved it the second time around. :shrugs: When I can mainline, I might like SHIELD better.
Firefly is the only Whedon show I loved from the first episode. Because of Dollhouse, which I eventually loved, I give most shows 5-6 episodes. And I frequently watch first seasons in 2-4 episodes runs. Many of SHIELD's failings fall into my issues with S1s in general. Too much set up and rehash of the set up and no real story.
I don't see the first episode of Buffy, the two parter until it was in syndication.
BSG is the only show other than Firelfy that I can think of that had me from the first episodes.
SHIELD will likely play better, quick and dirty, i.e. mainlined. ;)
I keep trying to like this show. I don't hate it but... it bores me. The first few episodes were fairly trite and terrible but it has picked up lately. Mostly

Not only is Skye the CW pretty people with probalems, she lacks weight in scenes. The way I find most of the dark haired girls on CW shows. Like not being blond is an interesting characteristic. And she is not helped by the the telling. Show me!
Ward I have half liked from the beginning and I do really like him and May, not romantically really, but his explanation of how they should fight together based on actual strengths. He has great potential. And it should be noted that I have only liked May since she started interacting with the rest of the team. Before that I couldn't figure out what they were trying to do with her.
he's great as a supporting character but there just isn't enough to him for the kind of role they seem to be trying to put him inThis is exactly my Coulson issue. He needs to be a tease, a hologram. The one who swoops in and saves them on an official leave, but he doesn't work as a field agent for me

Melinda May started off *really* boring. I have to admit I do not like Ming Na as an actress, I think she equates strong with standoffish bitch when it comes to her roles and I can't help but judge Melinda through that lens. But now that she's out of the pilot seat and actually with the team more there is actually starting to be something to her character, which is nice.

hee. I do like Ming Na as an actor, but I've been called a standoffish bitch and taken it as more or less a compliment more then most. ;)
I agree that May didn't start off all that interesting, and while it helps immensely to get her out of the pilot seat, I wish she were the character bonding with Skye instead of Coulson. May is the character that I think loses out the most to everything going through Coulson.
