What follows is a rant that i needed to get out of me or i was going to wind up punching somebody in the face, most likely my bf, for the simple fact that i had this boiling inside me. Its very angry, and very disheartening, if my boyfriends reaction to it is any indication, but nonetheless i felt i needed to share it with the world, or as much of the world as this counts for. so yeah.
Dear Human Beings Everywhere,
What the fuck are we doing to each other?
Look how far we have come, look at what we have accomplished. Phones small enough to fit in the palm of our hand yet they can text, call, play music, and surf the web. Certain diseases have been completely eradicated and others are in the process of being cured. We have conquered the atom, bending and splintering it to our will. We have peered longingly at the white swirl of clouds above the splash of blue and smattering of green with boots scuffing up the only wind on the Moon. We can slow death and create life in the test tubes of laboratories or even clone life as we know it.
And yet, for all that, we have not really evolved much.
In fact, we’ve barely evolved at all.
The mindless, ignorant, cruelty with which we treat each other is truly astounding. Almost as astounding as the fact that we find it within themselves to torture each other day after day for no reason at all and that we have no problem with it socially, morally or ethically.
Oh sure there have been battles. There have been outrages and protests. Calls and pushes for change.
But nothing has changed.
People are still dying. We are still losing people, children, to blind bigot filled hate.
For no reason.
For no reason at all.
People are still pushed to the brink of what their minds and souls and hearts can bear. They are driven to pick up the razor, the bottle, the needle, the gun, the rope. They are driven to believe that they have no hope left in this world, that they are somehow less, that they have no life ahead of them when their life has barely begun. They use this tool and the slice their life to a bitter and lonely end.
An end that is not their fault. They were killed not by the slit in the wrist, the pills in their stomach, the drugs in their system, the bullet in their brain or the rope around their neck. They were killed with the first bullying word, the first condescending and uneducated remark, the first resonating thud of their books being shoved to the hallway floor, the first time their back slammed into the concrete wall, the first fist to their face or gut, the first facebook post, and every incident after that. They were killed by the ignorance, the cruelty, and the bigotry.
We have been so divided up by nationality, race, gender, religious belief and sexual orientation that hate is just a matter of course nowadays. That is completely and utterly unimaginable. All the world talks acceptance and yet we jump up at the chance to go to war, to sling around a racial slur, to judge based on some ancient text or words of a man who lived so long ago, to bash judge and put down based on love.
It has been said that hate will destroy the hater, this is not quite true.
The acceptance of hate is killing our children.
It is killing us all.
Sincerely,
A 19 year old crying with empathy, with doubt, with confusion and with shame.
