Brunch in NYC?

Fellow NYC-ers....

I need recommendations for a good place for Sunday brunch - preferably on the Upper West Side but doesn't have to be. A friend from London is visiting for business and she asked us to pick a place for Sunday. I'm tempted to try Sarabeth's (http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7169079/new_york_ny/sarabeth_s_west.html) since we've ( Read more... )

I like Sarabeth's but on a Sunday for brunch the wait is about an hour. It's very good. I also like Josie's on like 34th and 3rd but it's a little "organic" perhaps. better burger owns it.

There is also Annie's in the 70's on 3rd, but again there is a wait.

Thanks, Laura. Yeah, I thought Sarabeth's might be too busy. I'm wondering if I can get on line earlier and sit there with the newspaper while my hubby can meet up with our guest later and come over to the restaurant when it's only about 10-15 minutes of waiting to go. I wonder if I'd get snagged for that...

We've been told before that they have to seat everyone all together. he'd have to be really sneaky ;)

If you go around 10am it's not as busy yet - if you want to get up early.

Maybe we'll just make it an early brunch and then the wait won't be so bad. And if it's a nice day, I don't mind waiting as much.

I actually haven't tried either of those places - but I'd love to hear how Sarabeth's is since it's in our neighborhood!

Otherwise, we haven't been many places for brunch. French Roast is ok - at least you can get in there. If you want bagels/lox, then Barney Greengrass is fun. Another place on Amsterdam called Good to Eat seems like it's always packed for brunch, but I have no idea whether it's good.

Oh - one more place I went this weekend while my parents were in town because it was their hotel's restaurant - Nice Matin on Amsterdam. I thought it was pretty good, though not a huge menu...but, it seemed like it was reasonable to get in there, and they might even take reservations.

We went to French Roast a couple of weeks ago and were happy with our food. I just don't know if it's a good enough place to take our visitor? I do like Nice Matin so that's a definite option.

You have NEVER been to Sarabeth's???? lila_02 September 7 2005, 04:50:46 UTC
Oh I am all over this one. Everyone I know lives on the UWS, even though I live on the UES (including all you Columbia-ites ;)

I recommend on the UWS (pros and cons included):
-Sarabeth's (great food, long wait - the Whitney location has the shortest waits, and bonus, I see Kate Spade there every time)
-Popovers (good food, great selection, crap service - every waiter is a L&O extra)
-Isabella's (good good, elegant, cramped, good amount of seating, and a great deal, take reservations)
-Good Enough to Eat (super cute, great food, long wait)
-EJ's (good food, pretty rushed service, wait varies)

Not a huge Barney Greengrass fan myself. Also, Artie's Delicatessan is a possible.

Nope. I know, it's crazy.

I went to Popovers years ago when my hubby (then BF) first lived in the neighborhood. That's a good option. We also love Isabella's for dinner and have been meaning to try it out for brunch. How's their menu at that time of day?

Thanks for all the recommendations! I'll have to save this post and refer to it again. :)

Isabella's is great value because they have one of those fixed brunch menus where you can select a meal and you get a mimosa/alcohol drink of your choice, and tea or coffee and I think a muffin or something. It's a great deal in my opinion.

Ooh, that sounds perfect. I'll make a ressie for Sunday. And then if we happen to walk by Sarabeth's on the way and don't mind waiting there, we can do that instead.
