I started playing World of Warcraft. Months and months of teasing people who play and rolling my eyes at the mere mention of the game, and now I'm playing

See, personally speaking, I don't think WoW is as addictive as something like Everquest, which was more of a roleplaying environment. I'm sure people have gotten addicted, though.
The reason why I don't get addicted to WoW (by which I mean, forgo doing things in person so that I can sit at home at play it and ignore work/school/relationships/etc.) is because the end-game content just doesn't appeal to me at all. I like leveling characters, but once I get to the level cap, I sort of run out of things to do. Raiding instances and participating in PvP just doesn't really appeal to me at all. I doubt it'll appeal to you, either.
But the way people get addicted to WoW is when they join a guild that's all about Raiding, and commit to many-hour-long instance runs day after day. Because then they become a part of the guild community, and it becomes more important to them than their real life.
So, yeah. Personally, I don't think you're in danger of that.
^--- this is true. The only people who suffer from MMOs are the super-hardcore people. I was in a guild like that once, and my grades probably suffered a little, but there were people who would be on like 12+ hours a day.
I know in high school a couple dudes I know like ruined their chances at college because of Everquest; I think they ended up going to community college.
Long story short; you are totally not the kind of person who that will happen to. I know this because you do things like 'go out' and 'talk.'
PS: if powerleveling is your thing, I can help you with gear/specs/etc. I had downloaded that speed-leveling guide at one point and it was pretty ridiculous, but doing stuff on your own is more enjoyable (until you type /played, try not to type /played much).
Also, every time I click on your 'Toss it' thing to comment in your journal, WITHOUT FAIL I think, "They toss it, leave it, and I pull up quick to retrieve it."
a few months ago, i received a text from a close friend whom i used to see on a daily basis. he had finally caved. the text went something like, "started WoW. see you in a few weeks." haven't seen him since.
I personally know of one relationship that broke up b/c the boyfriend was playing WoW all the time, and I know from Steve that many a relationship has broken up b/c of people falling for other playes. I wouldn't be surprised at all if people have lost their jobs because of it.
There's extremes to anything that people do. There have definitely been news reports of gamers overdoing it with MMOs and being all crazy. It's not common, but it happens.

It's just like any other thing you can take to the extreme, it's peoples' choices and I feel that the general population isn't very intelligent.
