Unfamiliar Faces

Some pumpkins scream; some cry; some beg for mercy; some whisper cruel words. There are, however, two pumpkins that differ. One, a man, sits on a stake outside the library. The other, a woman, is set outside along a pathway leading to the Great Keep ( Read more... )

Man Outside Library needsnobottle October 22 2011, 04:40:52 UTC
Tammy has been wandering around for a while now. A bit aimlessly. Ever since her pumpkin had woken her up with that screaming, she hasn't been as sharp as she usually is. Her roommate's shrieking--her messy, horrifying death--left traces on her person, and she'd sat for so long with the remainder dripping from her cheeks and onto her t-shirt that's it's now a crusty, dried mess.

She'd left her room, wondering if the screaming had left a ringing in her ears. It wasn't until she was outside that she realized it was the other pumpkins, the ones still on their stakes. Whispering.

She's tried to ignore them. But there's a certain light in her eyes that suggests it's starting to wear on her.

And now she's wandered to the library, half-looking for the pumpkin that looks like her so that these voices might finally stop, and half too shocked to really have a purpose. It's been a rather eventful 48 hours.

She pauses in front of a pumpkin that has a man's face on it.

"Kid," it says with something of a gruff familiarity. "Help me out here. I'm in the wrong place."

Well, at least that's not whispering. Her eyes focus more clearly on it, and she frowns.

"Yeah, join the club."

But she glances around, and rubs a hand over her bicep. Does it mean his stake is in the wrong place? Should she offer to move him?

"Yeah. You're in the wrong place, too. None of us should be here."

Its eyes roll as it looks around, and then they lock onto Tammy.

"Do you know the way? Did you find it yet?"

A pumpkin that states the obvious. What will they think of next.

She's not sure she wants to know.

"I found the way here. That's as far as I've gotten today."

She's got both her arms wrapped around herself now. The whispers are persistent against her skull and she's trying not to let them get to her.

"Not here," it says, insistent, "the way out. Finding the way in is simple, but getting out's a little tougher."

"Considering I'm not even sure how I found my way in here--" Tammy rubs at her face with her hands and presses at her temples, "--or have any idea how I had a hand in it to begin with, you're not kidding."

She takes a deep breath, the whispering pressing, pressing, and she thinks for a second she can hear her mother, her father, her brother, taunting her. She's gone and they're erased, but they whisper that she abandoned them long ago, that she failed them. Her father's whispers a moan into her ear, that she didn't try hard enough to protect him, and then Lini's scream fills her ears--

Tammy's mind sinks into something safe, and when she looks at the pumpkin again her eyes are perfectly sharp and clear.

"How do I get out?"

The pumpkin half-grins.

"That's more like it. First, you find the words. Then, you find the door. Door's easy - it's in the tower between the woods and the lake. Words, not so much. Those're hidden."

Tammy folds her arms over her chest, her posture erect, far more alert now that she had been before. As if the whispers no longer bother her.

"Right, a door. And these words are a key?"

"No. You can get through the door just fine. Hell, you don't even need the words to get out."

"But you want them," it says, and its tone becomes entirely serious. "You'd come back for them."

"I want these words, huh? They're that important?"

She visibly contemplates this, pursing her lips as she studies the pumpkin in front of her.

"Why are they important?"

"I'm not sure. But trust me, they're important. Might try to get them before you leave, just so you don't have to come back."

One eyebrow arches at this comment.

"Important enough to voluntarily come back to this place? Interesting. So," and at this new, brisk tone, she places her hands on her hips, "any hints on where I can find these words?"

"Where would you put words you wanted to keep hidden?"

"If I didn't want them found, I wouldn't write them down." This is accompanied with a smirk. "But sounds like these have been."
