Bonfire Party!

It was amazing how much work was necessary for a small get together, but also how quickly and easily it went with the help of another person. Especially when that person happened to be on staff ( Read more... )

Tumnus was not one to turn down a celebration and being a faun of Narnia, the lad knew a thing or two about them. So, he'd taken the invitation with a warm welcome and made his way to the festivities.

He, unlike some of the others, knew nothing of the previous effects of food or drink and took a glass of wine into his hand as he weaved through the participants.

He had not met too many people as of yet, but he was also not scared to introduce himself and mingle appropriately.

Then he's watching Bobby make ice sculptures and his eyes widen a bit, a smile curling his lips.

"That's pretty impressive work, young man."

Bobby turned from giving the ice sculpture a critical once over, looking for anything that was a little vague or misshapen, to smile cheerfully at the sight of a familiar face. A familiar face giving compliments!

"Thank you! I know I got some of the details wrong, but I haven't been here long enough to know them all. Hopefully no one'll notice."

Tumnus' own eyes move over the sculpture of ice as Bobby seems to give it his own critical eye. He tssks softly and shakes his head.

"I cannot see how anyone would have anything negative to say about it..it's rather extraordinary."

He turns his inquisitive gaze toward Bobby, interest bright in his eyes. "How did you do this? Are you a wizard?"

At that, Bobby's grin widened. "Thanks! I was hoping it might make a nice touch to the decoration."

He chuckled slightly at the question. "Not really? I guess what I do might be considered magic in some worlds, but in my world, it's just an ability I was born with."

Tumnus nods, his curls shifting with the motion. "I think it's a lovely bit of decor," he says lightly, his tone warm and genuine. Then his ears perk slightly and he listens with interest as Bobby explains. Bobby just might notice that the faun relaxes a bit as soon as he clarifies that it's not technically magic.

"So others from your world have similar abilities?" Can you hear the interest, Bobby? "Such is a limited thing in Narnia.."

He flushed lightly at yet another compliment, though his smile never faded. "I'm glad you like it."

Yeah, he could definitely hear the interest, which made him perk up. It was so awesome how many people here were genuinely interested in his abilities. "Everyone's power is different, but yeah, quite a few of us do. We're in the minority, though. Narnia is where you're from, then? What's it like?"

Tumnus' grins brightened considerably as Bobby seemed to take the compliment well. The faun had been taught early in life to give credit where it was due and there was little effort in complimenting something worth being complimented. In truth, something as simple as a compliment could change a persons' outlook on their entire day.

He listens as Bobby explains that everyone's abilities are different and that it is not everyone that has such abilities. "So, only a portion of your populace is so gifted, then?" Yes, Bobby .. Gifted. What you can do is a gift to be treasured and used, not hidden away.

Then the faun himself brightens, "Yes, Narnia is my homeland .. it is not so much different from this place in some ways .. greatly different in others. It is .. medieval, I believe is the word used by those from the outside. Castles, dragons, magic and such .. my own kind and many others."

Bobby and Tumnus were definitely in agreement there. It definitely brightened Bobby's day, and it was something he always kept in mind with others as well.

And he lit up slightly at Tumnus calling it gift. He still wasn't entirely used to people outside of the Institute thinking that way, let along telling him that. "Yeah. Not all consider it to be a gift, though. There's some that call it a curse."

He fell silent to listen about the faun's homeworld, smiling. "It sounds amazing. Like a fairy tale. What kind of magic is there?"

Tumnus tilts his head curiously at bobby's first words. "Why would they think this, young Bobby? When one is able to do such wondrous things as this or otherwise? How could they view such as anything but a blessing?"

He's not asking to be a smart ass, but because he's genuinely curious. "I cannot imagine having such abilities as these and considering them anything but extraordinary.."

Then the faun's ear flick and he chuckles, "It was as a fairy tale at times, but not always .. there are times of dark history in Narnia's past. The magic there is good, for the most part .. those that practice the black arts are few and have not been seen or heard from in decades. We are all the better for it .."

Tumnus shivers then, his expression unsettled. "I would not want for those times again for all the world, and if it is at all within my abilities, we shall not again suffer through them. Not so long as Aslan remains .."

He had to pause for a moment to consider what he was going to say in response to that. For all he'd talked a lot about his powers and some of how they were viewed back in his world, no one had yet asked him why. "It's... for different reasons depending on the person, I guess. Some people who have these abilities, they don't know how to control them. They worry they'll hurt themselves, or other people, without meaning to."

The punch in the cup he was holding frosted over slightly as he spoke. "And some people who don't have them, I think they're mostly afraid. They worry what some with abilities can do, and they fear what's different from them."

He nodded his understanding at Tumnus's words. It seemed as though most worlds had their share of dark times, and abilities - whether magic or mutation - could always be used for good or evil. "It sounds like you and I have similar sentiments about the dark times in our worlds. Who's Aslan, though?"
