It was amazing how much work was necessary for a small get together, but also how quickly and easily it went with the help of another person. Especially when that person happened to be on staff

Not realizing that Aara might not have seen him yet, Xanth approached. He had been standing near the food table as he spotted her, and so he carried one cupcake in each hand.
Xanth leaned down to peer at Aara. "Hey," he said with a lopsided grin, then held up a confection. "C--Cake?"

Attention shifting at the familiar voice and tone, Aara turns in slight surprise as she meets Xanth's now-familiar gaze. She smiles, happy to see him, and happier still that he went out of his way to approach her.
"Hello."
Then she is looking at the cupcake with avid interest, and back up at Xanth once more as she tentatievely reaches for it with a slight pinking of her cheeks.
"Thank you..." A larger grin spreads across her lips as her heart flutters and dances within her chest. It was such a pretty color! "What... what is it?" She's holding it close to her chest now, so she definitely likes it, but she had never seen anything like it in her life. A small smile crosses her lips as she peers up at Xanth, eager to find out what this was.
"I-It's-- a c-cupcake," he began. "They're just-- l-little cakes. Nothing t-too fancy."
Then, he realized that maybe Aara didn't have cake in her world, and continued: "A-And, uh-- c-cake is, um, i-it's like... a-a sweet, soft b-bread. It's-- i-it's good, i-if you like s--sweets."
Aara's attention was drawn back to the pretty cupcake in her hand. It looked fancy to her. New, at the very least. She smiled, saying another heart felt, "Thank you, Xanth."
Shifting her weight from one foot to the other, Aara lifts the cupcake to her lips. Her tongue quickly darts out to taste a tiny portion of the frosting, and her expression turns considering as she contemplates the taste. After only a second or two, Aara's blue eyes widened considerably. "This is--this is really good! It is sweet!" Sweeter than she imagined. She's smiling so completely as she looks from Xanth to the cupcake.
Xanth shakes his head and holds up his hand. "N-No, I-- I've h-had a-- a bunch already. You sh-should have tha--that one. B-besides, there-- there're a a lot more, t-too, so I can just-- I can get another."
Smiling lightly, Aara's gaze falls to her cupecake once more. "You know... where I am from, I do not believe anyone has ever giving me something before." There's a sort of sad light in her gaze, but her smile is one that shows she has accepted it. "Nothing I didn't need, that is." Like clothing. Which was still something she was truly grateful for
( ... )
Aara's excitement is infectious and Xanth finds himself grinning even more widely. He's glad to be able to give her something, anything, if she's had so few gifts in her life.
But the icing on her nose doesn't go unnoticed. His grin turns back into a sympathetic smile.
Blinking twice, a dark blush rises over Aara's cheeks as she realized her predicament. She quickly lifts her free hand to her face to block the frosting from view, eyes frantically searching for a napkin of some kind. Thankfully one is nearby, and Aara darts over to take it, wiping the tip of her nose and blushing darker still when she returns to Xanth's side.
"Thank you..."
She might be completely embarassed, but she was glad he told her.
Aara looks up in awe, staring up at Xanth as a beautiful smile crosses her face. She's definitely excited, and likes the sound of that.
"More flavors?"
She steps a tiny bit closer to Xanth, as if he needed to whisper it or the world would know and there suddenly wouldn't be any more cupcakes for her to partake of. "What flavors?"
Then a tiny pink tint rises over her cheeks, and while Aara's smiling really happily she negatively shakes her head and sheepishly looks to her feet. "I don't want to eat too many. Others here deserve to eat their fill." That was her way. Only accept after no one else wanted any more. It always enabled her to know she wouldn't be in the way.
That sentence alone put all Aara's thoughts on hold. She looks up at Xanth, peering into his eyes and scrutinizing the expression on his face.
She deserves some too.
...But, why? Warring feeling clash inside of her. Elation and confusion and sorrow. She isn't able to dwell on her confused thoughts and feelings for long however, because Xanth was taking charge, leading Aara to the cupcake table. A smile tugs her lips as he motions for her to follow. She can't help it. She's drawn in, and finds herself smiling widely as her heart flutters in her chest. She keeps her eyes on Zanth's form so she doesn't lose him in the crowd of mingling people, though she is also looking for the brightly decorating cupcakes as well.
Xanth stops in front of the table and picks up a chocolate cupcake. The one he'd given Aara earlier was vanilla, and though there were only those two to pick from, they were vastly different.
"H-Here," he says, offering the cupcake to Aara. "Th-this one's ch--chocolate."
Small smile alight on her face, Aara lifts both hands to tentatively accept Xanth's offer of a chocolate cupcake. She admires it for a second, then looks up to Xanth in question.
