Bobby'd been fortunate enough to actually read the announcement in the journals before he'd attempted to go out, so he was armed with a torch as he went off to the bonfire.
Well, no, that was kind of a lie. He was planning on heading to the bonfire, yeah, but not until he found Raven. It'd been pretty much his first reaction after reading Deior's warning that the Keep had been breached. It wasn't until he was already heading out that it occurred to him he could have made a journal post - but that would've felt too much like just waiting around. So he continued on, in search of Raven or his other friends, and trying not to worry too much.
She'd actually paid attention too - she'd been flipping through the pages, just kind of idly scanning them and responding when she felt like it when she'd read it.
And, staying in her room seemed like the safest way to do things, so of course she pocketed her journal and left, candle in hand.
She didn't see anyone right away - and the candle she had was pretty low and dripping wax into the holder. Frowning, she tried to quicken her pace. She didn't want to be stuck out here if the lights went out - not after that cryptic message.
The amount of relief Bobby felt at hearing Raven's voice was huge. At least she was safe. As safe as any of them could be in here, especially with that warning, but Bobby felt a million times better anyway.
"Raven?" he called, turning to head towards her voice. "I'm over here!"
Wandering around wasn't the smartest thing to do at the moment. It was dark and dangerous, and really, as brightly as her torch burned, it was unprotected from any wind outside. The thing was, she had started to drive herself crazy, sitting cooped up by herself. There were days that she felt safer outside, with room to run and move if need be, than trapped in the small cell of her room.
So she'd left the safer confines of the buildings to the courtyard, not far from the chapel, and found a bonfire blazing.
Drawn by the promise of safety and warmth, she'd gone toward it, stopping by the seated figure she recognized as soon as she'd gotten close enough.
"Couldn't stay inside. I was all by myself," she said, offering half a smile. She should have felt more guilty, sheepish for taking risks when there was trouble, but she was too happy to be outside to care.
A shame her coat from her Halloween costume wasn't quite warm enough. Bryn took a couple steps closer to the fire.
Joe held out his arm, inviting Bryn closer to both him and the blaze. To the dark, he cast another wary look. "Aye. Just... keep to the light. Don't let yerself get swamped in the dark or y'might not find yer way back."
He hated to think how many were already lost. The announcement had gone up too late. Joe hadn't had enough time to find anyone.
This was not the first refuge of the dark Xanth took shelter in. The first was the station in the barracks, run by the lady Isabel - but Xanth avoided speaking with her. He had people to find.
But it was cold, and he was hungry, and so he sat on a bench by the fire with a bowl of potatoes in hand and blanket wrapped around him. He had his scarf and his poorly-crafted hat, but they just weren't enough. This was bone-chilling cold, and this was no normal darkness.
Kairi found the second fire when her candle was burning low enough that the wax had started to melt over her fingers. She had come under-dressed again. No matter how many layers of wool or quilting she found, they never seemed enough for the snow, and already the damp was seeping closer to her skin.
It was with relief, therefore, that she spotted the soup pot by the fire, and with shock a moment later that she saw the silver hair on a closer bench.
It wasn't Riku.
But it was still a friend, that that was what she had left the barracks to find - that and a meal.
"Xanth" She spoke from behind him, clambering over the bench to sit down. She eyed the bowl of potatoes with envy and shivered as a snowflake melted on the back of her neck and began to drip down her spine.
Xanth looked up at the sound of his name and watched Kairi climb over. He sighed, relieved, but then that relief was countered with worry; she looked so terribly chilly.
"H-Hey."
Without even thinking about it, Xanth pulled the blanket free and draped it over Kairi's shoulders. He flicked his hand and the blanket fell around Kairi's side, but it wouldn't stay there long if she didn't grab it.
"Mm," She nodded and pulled the blanket closer around her, though she stopped when it pulled taut between them.
"You didn't look for me, did you?" If he'd been wandering around looking for her while she was wandering around looking for friends and food - well, it was both silly and unnecessary.

"I can't see anything!" Frustrated, she reaches out, trying to find the opposite wall, his arm -- anything, really.
"Is that you're sleeve? I really, really hope it is, Bobby."

So far, at least.
