Carlton, my deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. If your aunt was half the person you are, then this world will sorely miss her.

Your comment about the confluence of weddings and funerals really struck me. That sort of thing happened with my family a few years ago. It also made me think of something I learned in my philosophy class a few weeks ago. Apparently, in the Jewish tradition, if a funeral procession and a wedding procession meet on a street, the funeral must stop and let the wedding pass by, because in their reckoning, it is far more important to celebrate the joys of life than it is to mourn over the tragedies. I can't say whether they're right or wrong, but I found it personally intriguing.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Carlton. She was, no doubt, very blessed to have a family who loved her so much, and to have lived a full life. Nick's comment about the Jewish tradition is something to keep in mind, though: your aunt probably was not the kind of lady who would want to forestall such a beautiful celebration as a wedding, so I hope you and your family can find a little joy through all the sadness and be able to celebrate your uncle's happiness in a fitting way.

I understand that foreboding about "the next one". That was how I felt about my grandmother too. She lived till she was 86; she outlived pretty much everyone in her generation. I don't want to say it was "her time to go"...but maybe it was. Who is to say, right? Since this feeling is persisting in your heart, you would be wise to listen to at least a bit of it, and try to make the most of your time with your grandmother. At least...try to hang on to the time you have with her as best you can. It's small comfort, but it's something.
