Many years ago, I have developed a simple strategy of facing compliments, because they have always made me uncomfortable: it does not matter whether I believe what is being said about me, it only matters if I believe that the person who compliments me is sincere and genuine. It is very hard for me to take compliments as well. It seems I always try to make an excuse any time someone gives me a compliment. I can't just say "thank you". Even something simple like, "I really love that sweater on you," I'll turn it around and say, "Oh, the sleeves are a bit big, though." I'm trying to work on that though! Lovely take on the topic!

Acknowledging my strong sides is always coloured by the fear "is my head growing too big?".

Compliments seem to make lots of folks uncomfortable. I don’t mind them if they are sincere, but still get flustered as to replies, lol.

This is a delightful essay. It seems so YOU. I feel it sums up everything you have presented to us in the past: the steady, dependable friend who is not out to gather attention but simply here to do things right. In so doing, you set an example for the rest of us to aspire to. Brava.
