ANNIVERSARY

He smiled as he placed the sliced strawberries atop the chocolate cake he baked especially for tonight, the finishing touches to Junmyeon’s favorite dessert. The smile lingered as he placed it in the middle of their dining table, amidst other of Junmyeon’s favorite dishes.

Yixing stepped back to admire his handiwork. He made sure that everything was perfect, everything delicious and prepared just as Junmyeon liked it.

It’s been seven years since the day they first met and fell in love but the feelings have not waned one bit.  Yixing can still feel the quickening of his heartbeat everytime he thinks of Junmyeon.

He checked his reflection in the mirror, making sure that he looked handsome for his boyfriend. He was wearing the teal blue shirt, the one that Junmyeon gave him for his birthday four years ago. It was old but it was his favorite and the other boy said he looks the best in teal blue. He laughed silently as he recalled the soft, teasing kisses that came after.

He returned to the table and he smiled again as he sat down. His eyes traced Junmyeon’s face lovingly, the beautiful face he loved so much, encased in a special wooden frame placed opposite him. The photograph was from three years ago, the last photograph of him shining, perfect and brimming with life. The last before Yixing lost him to an accident one fateful evening.

“Happy anniversary.” He said. His eyes clouding with unshed tears. “I love you.”

CITYLIGHTS

Everything was getting more blurred. And he felt that he was running out of time. With his heart beating painfully fast, he held on to Yixing’s hand. He felt that this was his last chance to do this with the man he’s been in love with for so long.

“Look out the window.” He started. They were in the topmost floor of one of the city’s highest skyscrapers and the view at this time of night, as he remembered, was breathtaking.

“It’s beautiful.”  Yixing answered. “I can see everything from up here.”

“Yes. The way the city lights make everything come alive, the way they chase out the bleakness of the night is beautiful.” Junmyeon placed the hand he was holding against his chest and with a shaky breath, he continued. “To me, you are those lights. You bring me to life. And in this darkness… you give me hope.”

He could barely see the other’s expression but he could hear the confusion in Yixing’s voice. “What do you mean?”

“This means I love you.” He leaned closer to the younger man. “And I need you.” He was afraid to continue because he can feel the pain slicing through his heart even as he thought of the words he wanted to say next. “But I can’t have you.”

He felt Yixing move closer in return and then he felt his hand caressing his cheek. “I love you, too, Junmyeon. So why can’t we have each other?”

Because the world was fading in front of his eyes. The colors, the images were turning faint and black. He leaned his forehead against Yixing’s and whispered brokenly. “Soon… I would no longer see you. I would never see anything again. I don’t want to drag you into the darkness that I’ll be succumbing to. I love you too much for that.”

Yixing wrapped his arms around his shoulders and buried his face against Junmyeon’s neck. “You wouldn’t give in to darkness, I won’t let you. You told me I was like those lights.” He felt the younger’s embrace tighten. “I’ll be here. Let me be your light.”

Rolling Buffaloes

His palms were sweating. To say he was nervous was a complete understatement. It wasn’t butterflies that were fluttering in his stomach; it was more like buffaloes were rolling around in there. Kyungsoo wiped his hands on his uniform pants as he came closer to the boy leaning against the tree.

It was a miracle really that Jongin was there. Kyungsoo didn’t think that the taller boy will come when he left him a note inside his locker asking him to meet with Kyungsoo after class hours. It was clichéd and the tree probably witnessed a lot of confessions before but the school backyard was the only place he could think of to do this.

“Hey.” He called out. He wasn’t surprised that his voice sounded hoarse and faint. He cleared his throat and tried again. “Hey.”

Jongin looked up and straightened when he saw Kyungsoo. The shorter boy walked closer until he was just a few steps away from the younger. He couldn’t read the expression on Jongin’s face mainly because, well, there’s none. Those buffaloes? They started rolling again.

“Um. I guess you know what… well… what I’m going to say.” He started. His eyes darted away and Kyungsoo found himself focusing his sight on the tree behind Jongin because the tree looked friendlier. He decided to go for it and get this over with so he blurted out. “I-I like you.”

There was painful silence after. And Kyungsoo, of course, couldn’t bear it so he babbled on.  “It’s okay though if you don’t like me back. I mean, you’re obviously a popular guy and there are others who fit you better and you probably received a lot of confessions better than this and you probably have someone now, what am I even doing here, I’m sorry for disturbing you, it’s just that I’ve liked you for a long time and well, we’re already graduating next month and I may never be able to do this and I’m sorry really. I’ll just go.” With burning cheeks, he turned around and walked away, mortified with how he went about everything.

He was surprised though when he felt Jongin grab his hand, entwined his fingers with Kyungsoo’s and started to walk beside him. He looked at their joined hands and then at Jongin’s not so blank face. He was now wearing a smile in his lips. Kyungsoo probably looked so shocked because the taller boy laughed. He dropped his gaze on their hands again before returning a puzzled look at Jongin.

“What?” Jongin asked. “Isn’t this what boyfriends do?”
