It was their off night, after having just gone through a grueling schedule of overseas performances. Chanyeol decided to spend it in their dorm instead of going out with the others. He wasn't into bars or into movies, at least not for tonight.
He just chose to rest and go online. He already browsed through the EXO M and EXO K tag. He had to laugh at the candid shots the fans were able to get of the group. A lot of them caught him laughing too hard, face contorted this way and that, but that was fine with him. He couldn't change the way he looked.
There were also a lot of pictures of the group couples. It wouldn't be complete of course without the SeLu couple or what do they call them? Oh, Hunhan. There was Jongin and Kyungsoo, Kris and Zitao, and oh, this was funny: Joonmyeon-hyung and Yixing?
But he was most interested to see pictures of him and Baekhyun. He knew they were one of the main couples in the fandom. Well, that was fine by him, too. There was no other member he’d rather be paired up with than his best friend.
And every time he saw pictures of them together, he couldn't help but fanboy over them too. He notices a certain chemistry whenever they were together in one frame. He couldn't explain it. But there’s only so much of seeing himself onscreen he could take so he decided to explore Baekhyun’s tag. His friend was getting popular with the fans lately. Chanyeol smiled as he saw Baek smiling crazily at the camera. On another, Baekhyun was blowing air into his cheeks making him look like Minseok-hyung. Cute. Then one where Baek was hugging Yixing…
Wait. Yeah, they were cuddling.
Chanyeol felt an inexplicable pinch in his chest. Then he saw a picture of Baek whispering to Tao’s ear almost looking like he was giving him a kiss. And then there was one of Jongdae hugging him from behind, being all lovey-dovey. There was even a picture of him holding unto Joonmyeon-hyung’s arm in the airport.
Why Baek? He asked the Baekhyun smiling on the screen. Why did you hug him? Why did you touch him like that? Why don’t you ever do that with me?
Chanyeol realized that was the difference. Whenever there’s a picture of them together, he was always the one holding unto his friend, the one leaning down, the one slinging his arm around Baek’s shoulders. Always the one to chase after Baekhyun.
Why Baek? Don’t you want me?
Chanyeol was surprised on where his thoughts were taking him. But he couldn't shake them off. He was not jealous he told himself. He was just… not fine with it.
Why Baek? Why can’t you cuddle to me, too? Why can’t you whisper into my ear like that?
The questions kept on bugging him until he’s got a bitch of a headache and lump in his chest near the regions of his heart.
Chanyeol heard the members arrive, signaled by boisterous laughing and the opening and closing of doors. He looked up as the door to his and Baekhyun’s room opened to reveal his smiling friend.
“Yeol! You’ll regret you didn’t come. The movie was A-MA-ZING! Like there was the opening scene where kaboom! went the lab and then the car was going zoom…” Baekhyun went on and on with his jumbled story complete with sound effects.
But Chanyeol was having a hard time listening. He really couldn't take it. “Why Baek?” he blurted out.
Baekhyun paused and looked at his friend. “Why what?”
“Why don’t you cuddle to me like you do with Yixing? Why don’t you lean on me like you do with Kyungsoo? Why don’t you put your head on my shoulders like you do with Wufan-hyung? You even have a picture holding hands with Luhan-hyung and Sehun. Why not with me?”
“Yeol, what are you talking about?” Baekhyun asked a little confused. He was hearing what Chanyeol was saying but it can’t seem to penetrate his brain.
“I’m saying why are you different when you’re with me? Why are you cooler, more aloof, more distant when we’re paired together?” Chanyeol sounded frustrated.
“Don’t ask me that, Yeol.” Baekhyun answered looking away, finally understanding what Chanyeol was asking of him. “Let’s not go there. Okay?”
“Why? Just answer me, Baekhyun.”
Baekhyun looked at Chanyeol. Hell.
“You want to know, Yeol? Are you ready for it? Are you?” Baekhyun taunted.
“Just tell me, Baek.”
“Because I don’t want to. I don’t want to cuddle you. I don’t want to hug you. I don’t want to hold your hand. I don’t want to do it because it will be so obvious that I like you, that I like you a lot!” Baekhyun couldn't help but shout out the last part. He saw Chanyeol’s surprise.
“Are you satisfied now? Did I answer your question? Regretting asking now?” Baekhyun was getting angry. Inside he was mortified. He didn't plan on telling Chanyeol this way. He didn't plan on telling Chanyeol. Period.
Chanyeol stood up and went closer. Baekhyun couldn't meet his eyes.
“Why Baek? Why didn't you tell me sooner?” Chanyeol whispered.
“Why? How do I tell my best friend I’m in love with him?” Baekhyun sounding resigned.
“You tell it like this.” Baekhyun was surprised when Chanyeol gathered him close in his arms and touched his lips to his. “I love you.”
