PART 1
“Yamapi!” he called out as he tried to catch up with the boy. “Yamapi! “Yamapi!” he called out again for he the so called boy did not even seem to notice. After several calls, the boy finally notices as he halted and looked back, “Oh hey Yuya, what’s up?” “Are you deaf? I called you for about ten times and you just seem to notice now!” Yuya panted. “Oh really, I guess I was just thinking about a lot of stuff, Gomen…” he apologized. “ Its fine, I always knew you’re such a busy body… Anyways--,” “Hey what’s that supposed to mean?” he realized what Yuya just said. “As I was saying,” he completely ignored Yamapi’s retort “Ryo’s having a party and -““Yuya you clearly know that I have work right?” he blurted knowing what Yuya would say next. “-will you stop interrupting me? One, I do know that you have work. Two, I wouldn’t have invited you if I knew. Lastly, the party starts right after your shift, so quit butting in and listen to me ‘til I finish!” Yuya said fast paced knowing that Yamapi might butt in but it was just the right tempo where Yamapi could hear every word he said. “Oh, then okay, I’ll go… where is it anyway?” He was embarrassed and it was written all over his face. “Uhm… uh… my house” he looked up at the handsome face and smiled shyly. “And you say its Ryo’s party, Ne~ you lied” patting the shorter boy. “Fine it’s my party, ok, I guess I’ll see you later... Jaa!” he said with a disappointed and sour look in his face. He left already even before Yamapi could say his goodbye too.
‘Now, what’s wrong?’ he waited ‘til Yuya disappeared and pondered about his expression. Casually glancing at his watch ‘Oh no! I’m going to be late for work!’ he ran past the people who were walking on the side walk.
‘He’s so stupid, I know he’s busy and all but, why? Why did he forget my birthday?’ he sat on the swing in the park for as long as he could remember as he watched the beautiful orange sun set. Knowing that it was the weekend, he didn’t even bother to go home early and finish his homework just to prepare for the party. Hell, he didn’t even want to do anything anymore. He was gloomy, sad and in pain. The person who’s closest to him even forgot his birthday, how is he supposed to be happy about it? Seeing that thinking about it would not make Yamapi remember his birthday, he walked home and prepared for the party.
The party started as his friends started to fill in his apartment. They greeted the birthday boy a “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” and handed him his gift as each of them walked in. Two of his best friends were already here and yet, still no sign of Yamapi. ‘First he forgets my birthday and he’s late!’ he carried his gifts and brought them to his room for leaving it downstairs would just be a mess.
Looking at his party venue, it was just simple, no balloons and no streamers nor banners that indicated that it was his birthday. Punch bowls with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks were placed beside towers of cups. The food was simple and easy to eat. Yuya didn’t want a grand party or a feast just for his birthday. To him, having fun and being with the people he loves is enough for him.
All of them were having fun, they were having great conversations which Yuya would occasionally join while drinking. Entertaining them while they were here in his party was a common courtesy which he mustn’t fail to do. It would be rude if he would just ignore them right after inviting them. As time passed by, the guests were slowly decreasing. Yuya was left in his apartment with three or four of his other friends and his best friends, Ryo and Koyama. “Yuya, hey, are you okay? You seem pretty down. Did you forget to invite Yamapi? Why don’t you call him so he can come over?” “Ryo, you’re asking too many things. Yes, I’m fine. No, I didn’t forget to invite Yamapi and no, I do not want to call him” Yuya answered while thinking of some other way to avoid the subject.
*Ding Dong* the doorbell rang. ‘Great timing!’ Yuya thought while walking to the door, wobbling slightly. He may have thought it was a great opportunity to disrupt the conversation but he did no know that their conversation subject was the one on the other side of the metal door.
“Hey, Gomen ne Yuya, the manager wanted me to work for another 3 hours…” he tried to make Yuya forgive him by smiling brightly but it did not work. “Yeah, whatever” Yamapi was confused with Yuya’s cold answer that he completely missed the fact that Yuya was tipsy and pissed. Yuya quickly sat between Ryo and Koyama who were talking about something in school.
“Oi Yamapi! How are you? Come, come let’s drink!” he asked even though they saw each other just this morning in school. “Hey Koyama, I’m fine--laughs--How’s it going with Shige? I heard you guys got together over the web. Isn’t it a bit hard?” He sat down and started to gulp the wine all in one go. “Its fine, God, I miss him. I wish he’s here so I could hug him or something…” he sighed. “Too bad we got together when he was away… I miss Massu too; I wish both of them would be here so we could be complete again like the old days…” Koyama started to reminisce the old days. Sniff. “Ne~ Kei-chan, I’m sure they both miss us too,” “Why do they have to be so talented” He whined again. Yamapi ignored him; he did not know what to say for he too, wanted them to come back. They weren’t aware that Yuya and Ryo were listening and they can’t help but chuckle at this. The talk lengthened and they weren’t aware of the time. Time flew by as they were chatting and drinking but none of them were aware that Yuya was avoiding Yamapi somehow.
“Yuya, guys, I’m sorry I have to leave now. I have my part-time job tomorrow and I can’t afford to be late. Yuya, Sorry, and here” Ryo handed Yuya his birthday present. “Happy Birthday” he stood up. “Ne~ Arigatou, Ryo-tan” he stood up too wanting to walk Ryo to his door.
“Koyama!” Yamapi tugged at his friend’s shirt. “Damn it! I forgot it was Yuya’s birthday!” “What?! You’re such a stupid asshole! Baka! How can you forget about something like that?” he smacked Pi’s head. “Ouch!” “That’s for your stupidity!” “I was thinking about too many things that I forgot about it, help me! What am I supposed to do? He’s not cute but scary when he’s mad! Kowai!!” he said fear seeping unto his words. “Oh, so that’s why he was so sad…” Koyama murmured to himself but it was loud enough for Yamapi to hear. “Anyways, I can’t help you with that anymore, I have to rush home to use the computer and talk to Shige~” he said rushing over to Yuya who was just about to come back from the talk both he and Ryo had.
“Kei-chan! Where are you going?” Yuya called after him. “Ah~ I have to go home and do homework and talk to Shige” “Ah… but its Saturday tomorrow, do your homework tomorrow and you can use the computer here to talk to Shige” sticking out his lower lip, he failed to make Kei-chan fall for his cuteness. “Gomen ne Yuya, I have to do my homework because I have to help out at the ramen shop tomorrow” he quickly apologized handing him a gift. It surely brightened up Yuya’s face because he was smiling now. With all the conversation Yuya had, the tipsiness in his voice and body soon faded slowly as he watched Koyama go out the door.
“So I guess you’d better leave…” he shot Yamapi a look while snatching a bottle of beer from the fridge. “No, I just arrived, so might we might as well talk” he leaned on the table, both shoulders at rest on the edge of the table. “Yeah, yeah, so why did they make you work extra hours?” Yuya was tense, he could feel his sweat trickling down his forehead, and he tried to act normal. “Yuya, what’s wrong with you?” Yamapi asked inquisitively as he watched Yuya drink the beer until it was half empty. He took a swig too just before Yuya said something that was barely understood. Before he knew it, Yuya started accusing him for something accidental. It was true, he did forget but it wasn’t on purpose. “You -*hic*- don’t have -*hic*- the right -*hic*- to ask me -*hic*- that -*hic*- it’s your fault -*hic*- you forgot my birthday -*hic*-“he proceeded to drink all of what’s left in the bottle when Yamapi snatched it away from him, scolding him. “Yuya! You can’t handle that much alcohol and you know it! Stop drinking!” “NO! I won’t! Don’t think that you can boss me around just because you’re older than me!” Yamapi stayed silent wondering why Yuya was acting like that just because he forgot. Yuya saw his chance and grabbed the bottle from him, gulping every last drop until he passed out. The thud of Yuya’s body crashing to the floor woke Yamapi from his guilty trance. “Yuya! I told you not to drink that much, this is so troublesome.” He shook Yuya’s shoulders to wake him up but he only received a “Get out!” from Yuya’s lips before he totally became unconscious.
Yamapi did not know what to do except bring him up to his room and change his shirt at least. Yamapi did not want to leave him alone, especially when he knew that some time later he would eventually wake up and throw up. The least he could do was take care of him after he forgot a special occasion. He took care of him during the night. Yamapi would help him to the bathroom but still, Yuya kept pushing him away. Eventually, the puking stopped and Yuya slept soundly on his bed. ‘Why? Why do I push myself to help this boy?’ he thought looking the sleeping figure just in front of him. Heat rose to his face. ‘No way… I do not like him, I can’t… impossible!’ All the thinking made Yamapi drowsy and before he knew it, he was sleeping, arms curled under his head at the edge of Yuya’s bed.
Morning came and both figures were still sleeping quietly. Perhaps they’re having a good dream. The morning sun rays peeps into the curtain as it makes its way to touch Yuya’s sleeping face. It woke Yuya up; he was having a headache, a bad one he realized. He rubbed his eyes and temple, he felt a presence. Yamapi. “What is he doing here?” he asked no one in particular as he shook Yamapi’s hands. “Ne~ Yamapi, wake up, wake up!” Yamapi was a bit dazed because of the sudden call. “Is it morning already? Hey Yuya, Ohayou!” “How can you say that so casually?” Yuya screamed in a high pitched voice that hurt Pi’s ears. “Ok, I’m sorry, oh yeah, you passed out last night. You needed help, you were almost puking the whole night and I’m so sorry for forgetting you birthday, I guess I was really busy and stressed, I’ll -“he stopped as he felt Yuya’s arms around him, giving him a warm embrace. “It’s okay; at least you took care of me, even though I don’t remember anything.” He stood up, whacking Yamapi on the head with a pillow. “Hey! What was that for?!” “It’s for forgetting my birthday you dumbass!” “Wow, Yuya! Such language!” He clucked his tongue while giving an ‘oh so fake’ shocked expression. He started to run after him down the stairs, a pillow in hand.
They ran after each other, making more mess than what was left the previous night. They were having fun throwing pillows and tickling each other. Eventually they had to stop. Neither of them thought that a kiss would stop the happiness that was shown on their faces. Yuya tripped over a pillow landing on top of Yamapi who looked back as Yuya called out to him. Their lips touched, their minds went blank and they couldn’t move.
Yuya was happy yet scared, scared of what Yamapi might say or do, and happy because he finally shared a kiss with someone he loved (even if it was an accident). He felt his face heat up as he gradually felt the pleasure that was seeping unto his veins. He waited, waited for Yamapi to do something, to make the first move. He wasn’t pushing him away like he expected, instead both their eyes came in contact. The eyes that stared into each other gave signs that both of them were having the same reaction: shocked. No one made any move or sound, their breathing was the only thing heard, thankfully the clock struck: 11 AM it said. With this, Yuya basically processed the situation as he hurriedly stood up. He looked away, “Ano~ Yamapi-kun, I guess you better go home right now.” “Hai...” a dazed Yamapi muttered as he proceeded to the door, hoping Yuya would show him the way out even if he clearly knew where it was. Unfortunately, Yuya just stood there, waiting for him to leave.
‘Yamapi…--sighs--I still can’t forget about that… it’s been two days already…’ another sigh ‘I’ll just show him that it doesn’t bother me’ a big sigh. “Hey!” someone tapped Yuya’s shoulder and a loud scream was heard. “Ah! Ryo-tan, don’t scare me like that! I almost died!” he scolded Ryo, feeling his heartbeat. “What were you sighing about anyways? I was watching you; you did it three times in a full minute!” Ryo laughed “Anyways-“Yuya was glad Ryo’s teasing subsided but regretted it when he asks something that would make Yuya tense, “-What’s up? Why were you sighing? Is something wrong?” and there he goes again, asking too many things Yuya thought. “Nothing is up, I mean there’s nothing wrong, uh-haha-haha what gave you that idea?” He was too obvious, Ryo immediately knew that something was up but didn’t really ask about it. Their walk to school was awkward and silent. Neither one of them spoke up or even said something; perhaps Yuya was afraid, afraid that Ryo might notice something. Ryo too was scared, scared of touching on a sensitive subject especially when Yuya didn’t want to talk about it. Both were drowned in their own thoughts until they reached school.
(A/N: Yamapi is one year higher than Yuya, Ryo and Koyama are classmates, and 2 years higher than Yuya)
Classes have started and Yuya was fidgeting in his chair as he watched the clock’s hands pass by the numbers. He was definitely scared and nervous; he wasn’t ready to face Yamapi yet. He thought that he could act normal and pretend it did not happen at all. But, he just realized that it’s not as simple as saying it. He didn’t really pay attention in class at all. He was too busy thinking about things that he failed to notice that the bell had already rung which signaled that it’s their lunch time already. He realized that he was already 10 minutes late for lunch and he rushed out the door to the cafeteria.
He wanted to show Yamapi that he wasn’t bothered at all but being late would certainly not help his situation. He wanted him to see that it didn’t matter to him at all, and what was the reason for all of these? He didn’t want Yamapi to think that he liked him. Motive: their friendship would be destroyed; this is what Yuya’s been thinking. Clearly, he didn’t really know and assumed things, but in his mind, it’s better safer than be careless.
Dodging the people in the hallway, Yuya rushed to the cafeteria. He turned to the let and saw Koyama and Ryo in their usual spot, eating happily. He searched the table for signs of Yamapi being there but there were none. ‘Could it be that he’s absent?’ he thought while walking towards the table, carrying his bento. He smiled. “Ne~ Kei-chan, Ryo-tan, where’s Yamapi?” he sat down and faked a bright smile, brighter than the usual. “You seem happy and brighter than normal, Yuya. Did something good happen?” Koyama noticed as he ate the Maguro. “Yamapi is absent, didn’t you hear? All the girls were talking about it.” He was done eating; he fixed his bento and looked at Yuya. “Ah~ Kei-chan, what do you mean about me being brighter? And no, nothing happened. Ryo-tan do you know why he’s absent?” he looked at Koyama, confused at the remark and then to Ryo who apparently did not receive any message from Yamapi regarding on why he was absent. He started to open his bento when Koyama gave an answer to his question. “Ne~ you just seem different and TOO bright, that’s all.” “Eh?! You’re so weird.”
He could finally act normal without Yamapi around. At least he could rest from all the worrying just for one more day. But what he didn’t know was that he would take a break from his worrying for four more days. ‘Why didn’t Yamapi go to school again? It’s the last day of the week already and the exams are coming up...’ Yuya couldn’t help but think about this, especially when he tried his best to show Yamapi he wasn’t bothered at all by the kiss. Recalling this, he just might know why Yamapi was absent…
