Another holiday, another cat surgery

My cat Jack went under the knife again yesterday, so for the second time in three years I'll be spending my winter break taking care of him and making sure he doesn't rip out his stitches or something equally awful. Although his x-rays after the last operation (to remove his toe) were clear for one year, I felt two lumps on him last month: a small one on the throat and a large one on his belly. Lab tests on cell samples showed some abnormal cells and the lab recommended removal. My vet referred me to a veterinary surgeon for this, because the throat surgery would be especially tricky.

He had the lumps removed yesterday and spent overnight at the hospital. It was strange to be here with only one cat, Sidney, his brother, though Sidney didn't seem to notice/care Jack wasn't around. (Brat.) Today I picked Jack up from the hospital. The biggest challenge will be preventing him from moving around too much and ripping his stitches. The surgeon recommended putting him in an empty room without furniture. Easier said than done in a small place! For now he's in the bedroom and I tried to obstacle-ize as much of the furniture as I could, except the bed, but at least it's not very high. Another option is to put him in a pet crate, so I ordered a "soft" one to be delivered overnight and might give it a try if he gets too antsy in the bedroom.

The lumps were sent to a pathologist for analysis, but with the holiday I probably won't get the results until next week.

In other news, I spent last weekend in Indianapolis with
thevetia. We went to see the Colts play again. They lost this time but it was still fun to go to the game. We had an extra day this time and went to the Indiana State Museum and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. The museums are conveniently located right next to each other in downtown Indianapolis. Both are great museums! It was worth spending the extra day to visit them.

My plans for the break are pretty basic: take care of the cat and watch some TV and read.
