I have to agree with you. Without Earendil and his voyage, along with Elwing, the Valar would never have returned to Middle Earth and made war upon Morgoth. War is never a good thing, but in this case, it was necessary to finally put an end to his machinations.

It's just simply beautiful - so many beautiful stories in the Silmarillion. I just love it so much. That part is especially gorgeous and they were very brave.

I have often wondered why she didn't just say "Yes, you are right, the silmaril is definitely yours, take it." But it would certainly have made for a very different story!

And I always feel sorry for both of them then being forced into a life they hadn't wanted.
