Meeting is over! Finally, couldn't really take it any more. Heard F. Gilman at last session → data and theory have developed immensely in last 4 years but situation now is at best confused and at worst dismal. a lot of groping in the dark in lieu of any real theories.
Had lunch at Fortnum + Mason - very "swell" as they say. Lot of very well-off looking locals and tourists - some very snobby women. Expensive - £1.50 for cold turkey and salad - but tasty and worth it as a unique experience.
Coming down with tourist's disease? Stomach acting up, some diarrhea, and still 2 weeks to go. God! Coca Cola helped stomach - strange!
Buses getting worse - waited at Charing Cross for over 20 minutes for a #9, finally gave up and went by tube. Luckily caught a circle line at Charing Cross in a few minutes. Good looking girl aboard, talking to some tourists - Raquel Welch-face, but thin -not R-W body - lanky, angular look.
Looked for books and stamps on the Strand. Gibbons main store (391 Strand) has practically no japan at all! Did better at arcade across the street. Went to Ver Trindor and A. Lea - but no luck - also Harris publications. Talked to man at Gibbons rare + specialties branch (just down few doors), gave him my name. He called back ~ 5PM, had both Ichida and Woodward. But Woodward was a signed original, ~ several thousand $!! Ichida for £90 - high, but better get it while I can - went for ~$150 at last auction I remember. (Supposed to be no duty on books anyway)
Went to Abbey theater to try to get ticket for Pygmalion. Waited in long line, finally got ticket only for Friday, "royal circle" - 1st balcony but off to side. Ticket seller was snobby, but it was clearly a seller's market. (£2.80)
Weather miserable - rain and cold. Used my raincoat and umbrella again - uncomfortable walking though in humid weather.
HJL called this evening (~3PM Seattle time) just to tell me that Roger had screwed up one of the calculations on the 5π paper and not told anyone about finding the error. Also wanted to know if our papers had been referred to during meeting - deflated him by telling him meeting was completely dominated by NAL - ISR results. Wanted to know who was here - (because he isn't?).
Funny coincidence - HJL called at exactly the same time as I tried to call. Operator came back asking me about call!
ITV television had dramatization of Whitehouse tape transcripts. Very good! - Nixon actor had same type of face and voice.
Skipped dinner - stomach grumbling, no use pushing my luck.
English £ conversion rate is $2.3953/£ at Barclay's for AMEX traveler's checks.
HJL undoubtedly more worried than me because he actually presented the data at E. Germany conference. Now he and group have name on paper (to be published?) that has error in it. See what effect this will have on him in future? Will hjl be less "flaky' now or is he incorrigible - always looking for the flashy, easy things? Should I tell him what Huson said about how we should stick to bubble chamber (instead of counters?)?
PPS 2 years later, hjl hasn't changed still trying for the easy brass ring.
