I stopped using commercial shampoos a while ago. My hair is doing much better and my scalp and my allergies are not as bad.
I try to only use lotions and soaps made by either people I personally know or by companies who have open policies about there methodology. My face has been clearer than it had been in years previously.
I try to avoid hand sanitizers altogether. They are evil.
I try very hard to limit my children's exposure to the world of cosmetics.
Try looking into the world of laundry detergents and dryer sheets and fresheners (like febreze). Those are pretty scary too.
My main downfall is my makeup, but even there I am slowly replacing my covergirl with aveda, kiss my face and beauty without cruelty.
I'm not a fanatic, I've just been discovering what makes me feel physically better.
Ew. Yes. Hand sanitizers and any of this newish crap that says speaks to being antibacterial... EVIL.
I try to aim for "free and clear" and then check the label to make sure the statement is accurate, as far as laundry detergents. I've never used fabric softeners or dryer sheets. They seem to be fair well toxic across the board AND are stinky in the way that makes me have breathing issues. Yay.
*nods*
Funny thing is, I think a lot of people would change over and change up what they use after a period of testing where they found out that it ACTUALLY does make a difference.

One of my coworkers was complaining that her face keeps breaking out and nothing she tries works. I recommended pine tar soap. She asked how much it cost, which is about $3 a bar. Her comment "but I've been spending $40 on my cleanser!" She switched and was amazed.
Some things like "febreze" can interact with perfumes to create chlorine and formaldehyde gases around the user's head. Yummy!
