A Rant about sticky lablels

Why, Oh why do food manufacturers not use water soluble glues on the packaging! I'm making chutnies with the surpluses from the allotment and I've expended a lot of hot water and elbow grease trying to get rid of the labels from the various jars I've been saving but a good half of them leave a nasty sticky residue behind making the jars unusable as ( Read more... )

I've solved my own problem I think:

  1. Soak in hot water
  2. scrape with a short, sharp strong knife
  3. repeat the treatment applying neat detergent to the stubborn residues

I suspect that one end of the sulphonate molecules get stuck in whatever it is that causes the tack in the gum.
