The RSS diet

Mar 15, 2008 18:35

I read somewhere, it might have been in the bath, that one way to give yourself more time for fun and happiness is to not spend all day reading blogs and junk on RSS. Whoever it was recommended that you trim your feed list down to just 10. It means your time and attention is focused on only the things you're really interested in, and you don't wake ( Read more... )

I think I'm ok with this one. I don't even know what an RSS is so I'm assuming that I don't have any in my computer.

Although I didn't think that I had Repton in here until Hubby made him appear.

Hahaha! Repton! I haven't thought about that in years!

I've only got 3 (I think RSS feeds) I normally have LJ. facebook, flickr, hotmail, my comping sites and a local news site open 24/7 and will read them sporadically through the day. I could not give up my daily kol or neopets either.

I am not counting LJ, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Flickr ekcetera. Although I need to cut down on those as well.

It's funny, I was just considering doing the same and pruning my feed list.

I have several categories in there, including Things I Enjoy Reading (lolcats, dilbert etc), Things That Interest Me Because I Don't Live In That World (various medical blogs, paramedics, police etc), Things I Should Read But Mostly Don't (web design, typography, nerding etc) , Things I Mean To Read For Personal Development (but again mostly don't) and of course, the blogs of friends and family.

I should accept the fact that I only ever read for interest/entertainment, and not for education (the OU takes up enough of my brain-time as it is, maybe I should just lay off giving myself a hard time..) and bin the ones that are oh-so-worthy but too hard to do justice to when the head is too tired.

I wrote more here, but I think I will turn it into a blog post :)

I am a bit worried about you now if you like reading about medickal things when you do not need to. Do you enjoy rooting through hospital dustbins?

Like you say it is the fact that most of these things remain stoutly unread most of the time that made me realise they can go. Somehow I feel a bit under pressure from seeing 579 unread items, it is like if your email inbox is overflowing.

So I just threw them all away! :D

I mainly read the paramedic stuff to remind myself that my problems are negligible compared to some.. Being stuck with a database design problem, or recalcitrant css niggle is not really on a par with a heart attack (although could be considered a precursor, maybe!). I find it helps keep me closer to sanity and puts things in perspective a bit more.

A nasty case of CSS niggles! You need to smear the affeckted parts in goose fat, and avoid cold, damp weather.

The Guardian alone could keep you reasonably distracted through the day.

It would be better to go to the pub and read the actual Guardian, and do the crossword. With a refreshing pint!

I have 60 feeds on my Google homepage and 37 in Google Reader. RSS has successfully taken over my life.

Take the keithlard challenge! It is easier than the Pepsi challenge, as Pepsi is horrible.
