A pedant is stalking my journal

May 19, 2008 00:39

I just got a comment on a three-year-old entry! Who loves me so much that they are obsessively reading back through my journal to find tiny errors that need correcting.

Ligeti's Volumina

The commenter says:

I don't think serialism was in any way involved in the composition of this piece, just because its not tonal does not render it serialist. ( Read more... )

In point of fact though, I just realised that entry is the top hit on Google for "ligeti volumina" so perhaps that is it.

Yeah, I doubt anyone is stalking your journal, they were probably just looking for that specific piece. Also, the comment is on-topic, is not rude, and the person could easily have a point. I don't understand why you flamed them. :(

Well, I worked hard to make a piece of creative writing which was informative, funny, exciting and would introduce people to some new music that they would maybe love. This person looked at that, ignored it, picked out one word from the whole thing which was not precisely accurate, and saw fit to correct me with a public comment.

I can't help feeling that really they were just advertising their own cleverness. To me, they also advertised their own dickness.

*shrug* Maybe I'm biased because I live with someone who's into music theory... I thought they were just clarifying.

Yeah, I think the flame was a little unwarranted too, Master Lard.

However, this bit:

Volumina is about as avant-garde as you can get without going right beyond music and breaching the Geneva Conventions. The mere performance of this piece has actually destroyed two organs, and caused a complete electrical failure in the Royal Festival Hall.

It is one of those things which, a bit like perforating your cheeks with a stapler, is really nice when it stops. But after a few listens it does grow on you. At times you just want to laugh out loud and shake Ligeti by the hand for being such an outrageous fucking nutcase. I can see him sitting there, scoring a particularly horrific discordant serialist assault on the senses, chuckling to himself and scribbling in the margin, "That'll shit them right up."

... reads like the kind of stuff Neal Stephenson would write if reviewing a piece like this. Nice one.

What I would give for a little unwarranted, pompous hate-comments.

Shame they won't see your reply to their comment unless they can be bothered to come back.
