It has bothered me as well, though I haven't really payed much attention to him in a while. He sort of "jumped the shark" with the whole Crocodile Hunter movie. A manager at my work and I have been joking about him for a while, because he is a recurring character in Irregular Webcomic. I think why it bothers me is that he was a man so honestly enthusiastic about animals, when he said of a croc "what a beaut!!" you knew he was utterly sincere. He was obviously a passionate conservationist, and such passion in a cause outside oneself is rare enough. As hokey as it sounds, I do think the world is worse off without a guy like him.
Yeah, absolutely. There were a lot of naturalists who took serious umbrage at Steve's approach to handling and presenting wildlife, but God dammit, people dialed out when they saw another old British fart sneaking through the bush in a plinth hat or contributing offcamera voiceover, but they watched Irwin go crashing across South America picking up and shoving every animal he found at the camera, and listened to his cartoon dialect. And he knew it. And drove his message home as hard as he could as long as he had your attention.
The more time goes on, the more I realize we really lost one of the good ones. :\
On the positive side, someone has already come up with a stingray emote: ~{>:}
