A question for those of you who moderate livejournal communities:

I'm launching a new community soon and I want to be an effective moderator. What are some of the qualities that make an effective moderator? How do you determine the rules for the community, and what do you do if somebody breaks those rules?

Good stuff above. Most of the comms I mod run themselves, too, the big ones that need active involvement are vegancooking, veganpeople, and vegan_snark. The first because of moderated posts, and we keep very good track of rejected entries and who's ok to be unmoderated and stuff. VP and V_S attract the trolls and the butthurt apologists and drama so they require being more vigilant. VP mods have a seperate community where we can discuss issues and have a consensus before we decide to take any action.

Also, supercarrot is a super-mod and does such an awesome job with all her comms.

The best community that I've ever run was adopt_a_stoner. All I had to do was nothing. The rules were things like "No bad vibes."

be strict about the rules. don't play favorites. if someone makes a dick move, make sure they suffer the consequences.
