I wouldn't call that a research thing though. This is rather one of those commonly incorrect usage thing like affect/effect, every day/everyday, etc. The kind of thing that if it's not pointed out to you, you don't even think to look up because you have no clue its wrong.
Although if the reader does, it will jump out at them and really hurt writer credibility. One of those for me is taunt/taut. I was reading an otherwise (don't cringe) excellent R/Hr. Effective writing, good smut, really interesting and fresh characterizations of Hermione and Ron you don't usually see in that ship.
And then I came across a sentence that spoke of Hermione's "taunt nipple"
Perhaps that's it. I used prone versus supine in my lecture this morning on faulty word choice and spoke of how it hurts the writer's credibility to be unclear or dead wrong. We had a discussion about looking up words, just for verification, if these words were ones the author didn't use very often. Now, this was a composition class, but I've decided that no such thing exists as "too early" to get people to make sure they are saying what they want to say.

My laughter kinda spoiled the mood.
