A/N Been a little bored today and unwell today, so its been a lazy Sunday around the house, so I kept busy by writing. :) This is what I wished we saw between the girls after the gunman left. :)
Callie’s heart was racing. Of all the things to happen that could’ve placed the hospital on lock down she didn’t expect a gunman. She’d just got off the phone to the police, telling them everything she’s knew. She looked over at Arizona, her cheeks were still wet from the tears she’d shed during the terrifying moment earlier.
She stood to the side of the room watching her. She was running her hand up and down Ruby’s back soothing the scared girl. Callie sighed, the blonde looked distant, petrified, she’d never seen her respond or break down like that. Arizona was normally the strong one; she wasn’t one to show emotion. Granted it was totally understandable, under the circumstances, she was just extremely worried about her.
Callie was still shaking from the adrenaline that was rushing through her body. She looked back towards the door, praying and hoping that he’d left, and taken himself far away from the peds unit. Callie slowly walked over to the door and quietly started to open it.
“Don’t.” She heard Arizona whisper from her position next to Ruby. Callie stopped her movement, closing the door back over, before walking back to Arizona and placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“He’s gone. Okay?” She soothed lightly squeezing her shoulder. Arizona looked at her briefly before looking back at Ruby.
“Don’t leave us.” She asked quietly.
Callie leaned down and placed a soft kiss on the top of Arizona’s head. “I’m not going anywhere.” She said lightly squeezing her shoulder, before moving back around to the other side of the bed, to sit in front of Ruby. She smiled when she saw the small girl struggling to keep her eyes open.
She ran her hand over the small girl’s cheek. “It’s okay Ruby, you sleep. Dr Robbins and I are going to stay right here.” She told her softly soothing her, the small girl nodded before allowing her eyes to close.
Arizona watched Callie in awe as she calmed the little girl, running her hand carefully over her cheek while she slept. She couldn’t help but let a small smile escape her lips. “Thank you.” She whispered. Callie looked up at her and knitted her eyebrow in confusion. “Thank you, for everything. For what you’ve done, for helping calm her. Thank you.” Arizona said quietly.
Callie gently cupped Arizona’s face with her hand softly rubbing her thumb across the damp skin, she felt Arizona lean into her touch. “You don’t need to thank me.” She replied. She removed her hand from Arizona’s face and placed it on the small girl’s shoulder, drawing tiny circular patterns on it. “I’m just glad I could be here to help.” She said.
“I’m going to thank you, over and over again, because you just saved my life and Ruby’s.” Arizona replied looking down at the sleeping girl. “I didn’t know what to do, I froze.” Arizona sighed.
“You did what you were supposed to do, Arizona. You put your body between the gun and Ruby. I wouldn’t have expected anything less from you. You protected her, that’s what I love about you.” Callie told her.
“Maybe, but you, you confronted him, you were brave and amazing.” Arizona stated
“What I did could have been very stupid. I did the first thing that came to my head. I had to protect the one I love.” Callie said looking into Arizona’s eyes, giving her a small smile. “I know it could’ve gone dreadfully wrong. But I had to try and thankfully it worked.” She explained. “How are you feeling?” Callie asked tenderly giving her a knowing look.
Arizona sighed. “I’ve been better.” She replied with a small force smile. “I don’t know what I’m feeling, right now Calliope. My head is all over the place. All the feelings from our argument earlier are flowing through my head. I have adrenaline racing through my veins, I feel like I’m visibly shaking, and I’m petrified for this scared little girl, lying here in agony.” She whispered.
Callie took Arizona’s hand in hers and squeezed it. “Everything will be okay. I promise. The police know that’s he’s been here, and they know about Ruby, they’ll be here shortly. I know it.” Callie said, giving her an encouraging smile.
Arizona nodded her head and squeeze Callie’s hand tightly. “I know, it’s just hard being stuck here, and not being able to help her. Not knowing if he’s going to return. I don’t like not being in control of situations.” She sighed.
Callie laughed. “I’m glad you realize that.” She told her a smirk appearing across her lips. The small girl moved slightly on the bed, Callie soothed her again, and whispered quietly in her ear, calming her down.
“Did you just laugh at me Calliope Torres?” Arizona asked playfully is shock before smiling.
Callie smiled back. “Yes I did Arizona Robbins! You can’t handle not being in control, and when things spin out of control you freak out.” She giggled.
Arizona pouted. “Anyone ever told you, its mean to laugh at people?”
“I’m not laughing at your control issues Arizona. I find them adorable, and I love that you have to be so or organized and in control of your life. I respect it, but sometimes it can be frustrating.” She told her smiling.
Arizona smiled back. “I can understand that, but I was raised by a Marine Calliope, so organization and order runs through my veins. It’s all I know.” She said softly.
Just as the girls were starting to relax into their conversation the door slammed open, both girls gasped, Arizona immediately place herself over Ruby again, Callie also bent forward trying to protect both girls as much as she could.
“All clear” They heard a voice say. Callie looked up and saw the SWAT team standing there. “Let’s get you out of here.” He said.
Callie sighed “Thank god.” Arizona looked over her shoulder and also let out a sigh of relief, before quickly getting up. And moving around the bed grabbing everything they needed. “Got everything?” Callie asked.
“We need to get her out of here now.” Arizona acknowledged, as she started to move the gurney. Callie grabbed the other side of the bed. Leaving the room they ran down the corridor towards the exit as quickly as their legs could take them, the SWAT team following closely behind.
“Dr Robbins.” Ruby called. Before Arizona even had a chance to respond, Callie was already at Ruby’s head talking to her. She smiled before turning her head back towards the direction they were moving in.
Once outside Ruby’s parents came running over, they thanked both the surgeons and hugged their girl tightly. Arizona informed the paramedics on her condition as they wheeled her towards the ambulance.
She looked down at the little girl and gave her one of her magical smiles. “Ruby, you’re going to take an awesome ride in this ambulance here, and if you’re brave and lucky, they may just put the sirens on for you. Okay?” Arizona asked.
Ruby put a small smile on her face and nodded. “Dr Torres?” She asked. Callie stepped around the bed and leaned down in front of the small girl.
“I’m here.” She said softly.
“Thank you, for holding my hand.” She said quietly. Callie smiled down at her, and ran her fingers over her small face.
“It was my pleasure. Now let’s get you into this ambulance, so that you can get better okay?” Callie asked. She received a tiny nod from the girl. She looked up at the paramedic, who pushed the bed into the back of the ambulance. Both Callie and Arizona waved to her as she disappeared inside.
Ruby’s parents stepped forward and thanked the girls again before hopping in the back with their daughter.
Callie and Arizona both let out a collective sigh of relief as they watched the ambulance leave.
