A/N As promised I didn't keep you hanging too long for this update. :) May not get an update till next weekend as I have work for the next four days. :( Will see what I can do though. :)

An hour later, Arizona, Mark, Cristina and Arizona’s parents are all sitting in the third floor conference room, waiting for news on Callie’s condition. Arizona’s sitting at the conference room table tapping her fingers impatiently. “What’s taking so long? Derek said he’d come by with the results.” Arizona mutters tapping her fingers louder.

Arizona’s mum places her hand on top of her daughter’s hand, stopping it. “Patience Arizona, they will let us know what’s going on when they have the information.” Her mum soothes.

Arizona sighs heavily. “I don’t have patience when it comes to Calliope’s health.”

Just then the door opens and Derek walks in holding Callie’s scans, he smiles at Arizona and the others. “Sorry to keep you waiting.” He says looking directly at Arizona; she nods from him to continue. “Callie’s spinal x-rays are all clear, there’s no permanent damage, and she has a broken wrist and a fractured ankle.” He updates. “My main concern is.” Derek pulls out Callie’s CT scan and points to a small shadow on Callie’s brain,  “This small subdural hematoma.” Derek tells them.

“How bad is it Derek?” Mark asks from his position against the wall.

“It’s bad enough that she needs surgery immediately. But not bad enough yet, to need a craniotomy, I’m going to drill a small hole into her skull and drain the blood using a catheter.” Derek explains “It’s the less invasive option and hopefully we’ve caught it early enough.”

Arizona finally finds the energy to speak. “Has she already gone in?”

Derek looks at the emotional mess in front of him. “Yes.” He replies softly.

“She’s having brain surgery.” Arizona says shaking her head trying to wrap her brain around it.

Arizona’s mum wraps an arm around her daughters shoulder to comfort her. Arizona relaxes into her mums arm and rests her head on her shoulder, allowing tears to fall down her cheeks.

“Do you want to see her?” Derek inquires.

Arizona’s eyes snap back to his. “But she’s already in the OR.”

Derek smiles at her. “I’ve been in your situation before, it’s hard, and I get it. You can come in before I start, let her know your there, then you can leave. Sound like a good deal?” He asks.

Arizona nods. “Bailey will kick me out though.” Arizona utters.

“I’m the chief for a reason.” Derek winks. “Come on. Let’s go.”

“Arizona, give me your phone and I’ll try and get a hold of Mr Torres, and let him know about the recent updates.” Mark says holding out his hand. Arizona hands her cell phone over to him and smiles her thanks.

She looks around the rest of room, giving them a small smile before following Derek towards the OR. Arizona grabs a scrub cap, a gown and a mask and puts them on before she follows Derek into the operating room.

Bailey looks up. “What she’s doing here Shepherd?” She asks annoyed. “We can’t operate with her in the room, you know the rules.”

“Is she stable?” Derek questions Bailey.

“Yes, we’ve found the bleed, its coming from her spleen, clamped it off for the moment, just making sure there are no more internal injuries or bleeds before we repair her spleen and close her up.” Bailey informs him.

“Then stop what you’re doing for the second while she sees Callie before I start operating.” Derek pleads, knowing how stubborn Bailey can be.

Bailey sighs in defeat. “Fine, but make it quick Arizona.”

Arizona quickly makes her way over to Callie. She grimaces at the sight of Callie on the operating table, no matter how many patients she’s operated on, she’s never felt this nervous or scared in an operating room before.

Arizona places a small kiss on Callie’s cheek and whispers in her ear. “Stay strong for me Calliope. I need you; I can’t live my life without you. Plus you’re parents are on their way here, I’m going to meet your mother, did you hear me, your mother, I need you here for that. Please. Make it through this. You’re my everything.” Tears running down her face, she places another small kiss on Callie’s cheek. “I love you so much.” Arizona runs a thumb lightly over Callie’s cheek before leaving. “Thank you.” She whispers to Derek on the way out.

------

Three hours later, Arizona’s resting her head on the conference room table asleep. She slowly wakes as she hears the door open, Bailey steps in and smiles. “She in the ICU, everything went as well as could be expected. Derek managed to drain the hematoma, and it looks like she’ll make a full recovery.” Bailey explains confidently.

Everyone in the room lets out a collective sigh of relief.

“Has she regained consciousness?” Arizona asks hopeful.

“No, we’re hoping it won’t be too long though, she’s still highly dosed up on meds though.” Bailey replies.

“Okay.” Arizona sighs.

“Can we go see her?” Mark asks for conformation.

“Yes, but you know the rules. No more than two at a time.” Bailey informs them before leaving.

They all make their way out of the conference room, quickly heading towards ICU. Once they reach the doors Arizona takes a seat in the waiting room, causing all of them to give her a questioning look.

“You go first” She tells Mark and Cristina. “Once I enter that room, I’m not leaving her side, so you all go before me. I’ll wait.”

“No.” Cristina says taking a seat next to her. “She’ll want you in there first. You go with Mark, once he comes out I’ll go in. Or I’ll find a way to sneak in.” Cristina laughs.

“Thank you.” Arizona smiles at Cristina, standing up, she walks over and hugs her parents “You should go get some rest. Or at least have something to eat.” She tells them, kissing both of them on the cheek. “Thank you, for being here. I know you have to travel later tonight”

Arizona’s parents smile at her. “We’ll go get breakfast for everyone, you need to eat too Ari. You need to keep your strength up for Callie.” Her dad tells her, kissing the top of her head and walking towards the lift.

“We’ll be back soon. We’ve changed our flight; we don’t leave till tomorrow night.” Her mum informs her, kissing her cheek, before following her husband to the lift.

Arizona turns towards the doors of the ICU, pausing and taking a deep breath. Mark places a comforting hand on her shoulder, Arizona gives him a small smile before opening the door and walking through, Mark following close behind. She walks along the hall looking into each room she passes, until she sees a nurse. “What room is Callie Torres in?” She asks her politely.

“Dr Torres is two doors down on the left.” The nurse replies pointing towards the open door. She smiles at Arizona, “If you need anything, you let me know okay?

Arizona nods her silent response before taking off towards the room. She can feel her heart racing a million miles a second as she reaches the door. Arizona gasps when she sees her girlfriend, she quickly races over to the side of the bed and takes Callie’s uninjured hand in hers running her fingers over the back of it, “Oh, Calliope.” She sighs.

Arizona turns at the sound of someone walking into the rom. “Julie.” Arizona sighs when she sees the nurse. “She’s ventilated. When did they ventilate her? Why did they ventilate her?” Arizona asks worriedly.

Julie walks around the bed, jotting down Callie’s obs on her chart. “Its precautionary Arizona, she’s breathing over it, and she’s only on 25% oxygen, as soon as she regains consciousness, and we know she’s okay, we’ll remove it.” Julie explains.

“I have to go check on my other patients, I’ll be back later, I’m around if you need me.” She says as she walks out the door, passing Mark on the way. “Make sure she remains the family and doesn’t turn into the doctor. I’d hate to come back and find Dr Torres extubated.” Julie whispers.

“I promise, she’ll sit in a chair and hold her hand, that’s it.” Mark whispers his reply. Mark walks over to the other side of the bed, opposite Arizona; he leans down and places a kiss on the top of Callie’s head. “Hey Cal, it’s just me. If you wanted attention, or time off work, you know you didn’t have to go this far right?” Mark softly jokes into Callie’s ear.

Mark walks over to the far side of the room and picks up one of the chairs sitting there, walking around the bed he places it behind Arizona, “Hear sit down, you’re going to be here awhile.” He tells her.

Arizona gives him an appreciative smile and takes the offered seat. She pulls it as close to the bed as she can, so she can rest her chin on the edge of the bed. She holds Callie’s hand with one of her hands, while running the fingers of her other hand lightly up and down Callie’s arm. Arizona can feel herself struggle to keep her eyes open, she gives in and lets them fall allowing sleep take her for the second time today.

----

Arizona’s startled out of her sleep by a hand on her shoulder, she looks up to see Cristina standing there holding out a tray with a coffee and a bagel on it. “I’m under strict instructions to make sure you eat this, even if I have to force feed you myself.” Cristina tells her.

Arizona hears a chuckle from the other side of the bed and see’s Mark sitting there drinking his coffee, she turns her head back to Cristina. Arizona takes the coffee and bagel, “I thought we were only allowed two visitors at a time?” Arizona asks a little dazed, looking at Cristina who’s now wearing her scrubs. “I thought you had today off?”

“I do, but the nurses don’t know that. Plus there are only two visitors, and one doctor.” Cristina jokes taking a seat next to Mark. “Blue scrubs get you in almost anywhere, unquestioned in this hospital.”

Arizona smiles and places her coffee and bagel on the bedside table, she stands up and kisses Callie’s cheek, she sits back down returning her hand to Callie’s playing with her fingers.

Derek walks into the room to check on Callie’s condition and takes note of the three doctors sitting at her bedside. “Glad to see you three abiding by the visiting rules.” He jokes, walking over to Callie and checking her charts before checking her pupils and her dressing. “Everything looks good, but we’ll know more when she regains consciousness.” Derek informs them. “I’m off to a board meeting, but I’ll drop by later once she’s regains consciousness.” He says leaving the three of them.

Arizona sighs “Come on Calliope, wake up for me.”

“Arizona, why don’t you go out and get some fresh air? Maybe go have a shower and freshen up?” Mark suggests. “I’ll stay here with her, she won’t be alone.”

“No, I need to be here when she wakes up. I’m not leaving.” Arizona stubbornly replies, placing a kiss on the back of Callie’s hand and laying her head down next to it again.

“Arizona, you’re exhausted and frankly you look like shit. Please, take a break.” Mark pleads.

“No, I’m just going to sleep.” Arizona weakly replies allowing exhaustion to take her again.

------

Callie flinches at the pain she feels coursing through her body. She doesn’t know where she is, her thoughts and memories are scrambled and fuzzy. The last thing she remembers is leaving the hospital on her way to Arizona’s.

She slowly opens her eyes, quickly closing them as the light penetrating through them causes her pain. She tries again this time blinking rapidly giving her eyes time to adjust. Her sight is blurry at first but she can still manage to see the outline of a figure leaning over her.

Mark looks down at Callie as she slowly fights her way through her haze. He smiles at her reassuringly and places a hand on her shoulder.

Callie’s eyes finally adjust and her eyes go wide when she realizes her whereabouts, she moves her sight down to the tubes that she can see sticking out of her mouth, her eyes shoot back to Marks in panic. Mark lightly rubs her shoulder trying to calm her. His eyes wander over to the sleeping blonde on the edge of the bed.

Callie follows Marks gaze and just manages to see the blonde curls resting on the edge of the bed. She weakly lifts her hand and runs her fingers gently through the hair, trying to gently wake the sleeping form.

Arizona slowly opens her eyes and sits up quickly when she registers the moving hand in her hair. A bright smile spreads across her face when she locks her eyes with those of her girlfriend. She quickly makes her way up to Callie’s face and carefully places gentle kisses over every inch of skin she can.

Arizona pulls back, leaving her hands on either side of Callie’s face, looking into her eyes. “You scared me so much.” She whispers a tear falling down her cheek.

Callie’s moves her uninjured hand up and wipes the tear away, before moving down to touch the tubing in her mouth. She gives Arizona a pleading look. Arizona removes Callie’s hand from the tubes and holds it tightly in hers giving her a reassuring squeeze.

“Mark, Cristina, can you please extubate her.” Arizona says not losing eye contact with Callie once.

“Are you sure about that?” Mark asks unsure.

Both Arizona and Callie snap their heads towards Mark and give him a look, he sighs, “Fine, but you two can take the blame.”

Mark and Cristina move around the room, turning off the machine and disconnecting the tube. “You know the deal Cal, on the count of three, breathe out for me okay?” Mark instructs Callie, she nods slightly, and closes her eyes bracing herself. “One, two, three.” Mark counts, as he pulls the tube out of Callie’s throat.

Callie coughs and gasps for air as the tubes come out Cristina places an oxygen mask on her. “Deep Breath Cal. Slow deep breaths” She tells her.

Arizona runs her fingers over Callie’s cheek, when Cristina and Mark step aside. “Open your eyes Baby look at me. Deep breaths, in, out, in, out.” Arizona soothes and demonstrates.

Callie opens her eyes and takes a deep breath, inhaling and exhaling as Arizona tells her to. Callie’s breathing becomes regular and steady, and she smiles at Arizona. She moves her hand up to Arizona’s cheek and runs her thumb across her tear stained cheek. “Hi.” Callie croaks through the marks, her throat sore and dry.

More tears run down Arizona’s cheek. “Hi.” She smiles, leaning in and placing a kiss on her cheek.

Callie removes the oxygen mark from her face and turns her face towards Arizona giving her a look, letting her know exactly where she wants a kiss. Arizona smiles and closes the distance between their lips and kisses her softly, holding her lips on top of Callie’s for what seems like forever.

“I knew you couldn’t be trusted, to be left alone with her. I asked you to make sure this didn’t happen.” Julie snaps from the doorway looking at Mark.

Arizona and Callie pull apart from the kiss and look at Julie sheepishly. Arizona softly places the oxygen mask back on Callie’s face. Callie pouts but Arizona gives her a look to say don’t argue. Arizona sits on the edge of the bed holding Callie’s hand.

Mark holds his hands up in the air. “Hey, I have no control here, they wanted it out, I tried to argue, but you ever dealt with two angry lovers? In the interest of my safety, I did what they told me to.” Mark explains trying not to giggle.

Julie laughs and shakes her head, turning to the two girls.  She walks over to the bed, taking the remote and starts to raise the top of the bed to sit Callie up a little, she sees her grimace in pain as the bed moves. “Would you prefer to be laying flat?” Callie shakes her head and braces herself as Julie presses the button again raising the head of the bed further, stopping once Callie was at a 45 degree angle.

“I need you to keep the oxygen mask on for at least another hour Callie. I’ll be back then to see how you’re going.” Julie looks around the room. “You’re in good hands here though. Let me know if you want anything for the pain.” Julie says before leaving the room.

“What happened?” Callie asks coarsely looking over her injured body.

Arizona moves her position on the bed so that her backs resting next to Callie’s, she takes Callie’s hand in hers giving it a light squeeze. “You were hit by an out of control car, when you were leaving the hospital.” Arizona quietly replies.

“Oh.” Is the only thing Callie can find to say. “How bad are my injuries?” Callie asks turning her head to face Arizona.

“You had internal injuries, Bailey went in and found the bleeding, it was your spleen, and they were able to save it though. You have a broken wrist and fractured ankle, which have been reset in casts. Lots of cuts and bruises, and you had a subdural hematoma.” Arizona finishes.

Callie instantly touches her head and feels the bandage around it. “They didn’t shave my head did they?” Callie asks worriedly.

Cristina and Mark laugh from their seats, Arizona shoots them a disgusted look, her mouth hanging open. “Calliope, you were hit by a car, you’re in intensive care, you’ve had major surgery and all you’re worried about is your hair!?” Arizona exclaims.

Callie smiles, “No it’s not all I’m worried about, but I can’t pull off the Britney look.” Callie says. Arizona rolls her eyes.

Mark steps up to the bed and places a hand on Callie’s shoulder. “I’ve gotta go, I was meant to do rounds 4 hours ago. I’m going to go get some sleep but I’ll be by later.” He tells her leaning down and kissing her cheek, before walking to the door, he pauses. “Oh Cal, Derek gave you a Mohawk.” Mark jokes before walking down the hall away from the room.

“He didn’t!” Callie gasps, once again touching her head. This time Arizona can’t help but laugh.

“No, he didn’t. You didn’t need a craniotomy; he just had to drill a small hole to drain the blood. So I’m assuming it’s just a small patch of hair that we’ll be able to cover with the rest of your hair.” Arizona reassures her.

“Yeah like a comb over.” Cristina adds laughing.

“Don’t you have somewhere else to be Cristina?” Arizona asks glaring at her.

“No actually I don’t. Was hoping to be here when the Torres’ arrive.” Cristina teases “That ought to be some fun.”

Callie turns to Arizona. “My parents are coming?” She asks scared. “Like both of them?” She clarifies.

Arizona smiles and places her hand on Callie’s leg, “Yes, I called them as soon as you were taken into surgery. I had to; you were in pretty bad shape Callie.” Arizona sighs.

“Yep, and Arizona’s parents are in the waiting room, so it’s going to be a big exciting family meet and greet. As I said, this is going to be fun.” Cristina grins.

“Shut up Cristina.” Callie retorts lifting her hand to point at her, she see its covered by a cast. Her eyes go wide in realization for a second, before she looks down at her ankle. “Get my x-rays” Callie demands looking between Cristina and Arizona. “Now!” She shouts when neither moves. Cristina jumps up and walks out towards the nurse’s station in search of Callie’s files.

“Calliope, they reset the bones fine.” Arizona tries to soothe.

“Let me be the judge of that.” Callie sighs. “This.” Callie holds up her right wrist cover in plaster “This is my scalpel hand.” Callie says looking into Arizona’s eyes. “So I’ll be the judge.”

Cristina returns to the room holding the pile of x-rays and scans. She pulls out both of Callie’s wrist x-rays hands them to her. Callie inspects the first x-ray of her broken wrist and then the second x-ray or her reset wrist, she sighs in relief, before nodding her approval. “Not bad. I could’ve done better, but that’s because I’m the best.” She smirks.

Callie hands the x-rays back to Cristina and rests her head on Arizona’s shoulder. Arizona wraps her arm around her placing a kiss on the top of her head, “Sleep.” Arizona whispers in her ear.

“You’ll stay?” Callie asks weakly.

Arizona turns onto her side resting her hand on Callie’s stomach rubbing her fingers across it soothingly, her other arm wrapped gently around Callie’s shoulder. “I’m not going anywhere. I promise.” Arizona tells her, placing a kiss on her cheek.

Callie quickly removes the oxygen mask and places a soft kiss on Arizona’s lips, before replacing the mask back on her face. “I love you, Arizona Robbins.” Callie declares taking Arizona’s hand in hers intertwining their fingers together. She closes her eyes and allows herself to relax into her girlfriends arms.

“I love you too, Calliope Torres.” Arizona replies smiling and closing her eyes.

Cristina rolls her eyes at the two of them. “I’m going to go before I puke.” Cristina groans leaving the two of them to fall asleep in each other’s arms.
