“Imitation black pearls.”
“Excuse me?”
He took a long pull off the bottle of Budweiser in his hand before repeating himself. “The pearls you’re wearing. They’re fake.”
The first time she’d come face to face with the notorious Greg House outside a hospital and he’d insulted her jewelry.
“How do you know that?” Her fingers touched the necklace lightly.
“I can spot fraud at a hundred paces.” He voice dropped into a conspiratorial pitch. “Don’t be embarrassed, I’m sure no one else could tell.”
“I’m sure everyone else is too drunk to notice.” From the kitchen she surveyed the living room crowded with M4’s about to leave the warm, cushiness of medical school and head into the real world of medicine. No wonder they were drunk.
“First year?”
“Second year now.”
“Say good-bye to pass/fail.”
“Yeah.”
The conversation died out and she took a sip of her watered-down vodka rocks. He opened another beer.
“I’m Lisa-“
“I know who you are. Lisa Cuddy-second brightest star in the first year class. Determined, driven and studious. But it’s the ‘second brightest’ that really bothers you. ”
She blinked back surprise at the denominators he’d reduced her to.
“Also,” he continued, “Never seen outside the library or the dorms. Which makes tonight all the more interesting. Felt like a little party?” He capped his statement with a leer she intended to ignore.
“Felt like something different. I notice you didn’t introduce yourself.”
“Is it necessary?”
Her eyes rolled. “Gregory House-brightest star in the fourth year class. Legendary for his biting sarcasm and over-inflated ego. Amateur gemologist.”
“The lady has wit.”
She tossed back the last of her drink. “The lady is leaving. Good luck, Dr. House.”
He caught her wrist as she laid the red plastic cup on the counter beside him.
“Stay.”
“Why?”
“We could talk. Get to know each other better.” That leer again.
She studied his hand still wrapped around her wrist and then looked up into blue, blue eyes. Something different.
A week later he was gone.
Her first purchase after becoming Chief was a strand of black pearls. The day he came to interview-she wore them.
