She wonders what her parents would think of Billy Keikeya. She’d never been one to bring boys home when she was growing up.
He’d have been given the not-so-grand tour of their modest home. In her childhood bedroom he’d see her old notebooks, well-loved paperback collection and science fair medals. She’d kiss him in there because she’d always wanted to.
Her father would put on his sternest face during the pre-dinner third degree, but by dinner it would be all smiles. Her mother would cook too much, feed him too much and send him home with a plate “for later.”
While cleaning up the kitchen she would pretend not to hear her father ask his intentions. She would hold in her delight when Billy responded something along the lines of “forever.”
They would’ve liked him.
She thinks.
