Really great books!

Tonight I reached my goal of reading all of this year's National Book Award finalists for young people's literature. And they were all really, really good. Not a stinker in the bunch. Perhaps you're thinking, "Duh." But the thing is, sometimes a book (for old or young) can win an award (not just the NBA, but any award), and then I'll read it and ( Read more... )

Kel,

I think Nancy's RULES OF SURVIVAL is just SO good. One of the best books I've read all year.

I'm embarrassed to have to say that I haven't read any of the others. I don't know how, but my to read list just grows and grows.

I'm going to bump up KETURAH AND LORD DEATH though. I've heard such great things about it and your comment confirmed it.

Good to see you, Marlene! I loved Rules of Survival (obviously) and think it was one of the best I've read in a long time....it's so different from Keturah...how do the judges compare books? It's so hard!

I am reading Octavian. The book is a little challenging but what a book. I love it that Anderson uses words not common in today's language. It makes you run to the dictionary, one of my favorite books.

Thanks Kelley for the comments on the other titles. I will add them to my reading list.

Hi Karry,
Octavian definitely isn't for everybody, nor is any book! Guess that's good that there are so many writers! I'll be interested to hear what you have to say by the end. I found the language very challenging at first, but then I sort of liked it. I heard that Anderson read a bunch of texts from the 18th century each time he sat down to write so he could get into that flow. Not sure if that's true, but he really nailed that voice!
