Book Signing Canceled after Threats

Feb 01, 2007 12:14

There are a couple of things I've been wanting to write about, and I'm wanting to catch up on everybody else's doings. Just no time right now. BUT I couldn't let this go without posting the link.

Bookstore receives protests, cancels reading
The editor of an abortion-rights book was to be at Iowa City's Prairie Lights.

I never thought this could happen in Iowa City! Very sad...

I know!! It's really bad. And I can't believe that it wasn't played bigger in the Register. It's almost like everyone just accepts it or something.

One thing that people outside of Iowa City probably don't know is the woman who is the head of the Emma Goldman clinic did a guest column in the Press Citizen a week or so ago where she claimed she was "pro-life"...her point being, of course, that she is pro-WOMEN'S LIVES (and pro-children's lives AFTER they've been born and they're living in poverty etc.). But anyway, she got a bunch of people pretty riled up (more than I would've thought COULD'VE gotten riled up about that issue around here!)...the Press Citizen ran an ENTIRE PAGE of letters criticizing her on two different days this week. (And then today there was an entire page of letters defending her.) But anyway...I'm guessing that whole thing had something to do with the threat at PL ( ... )

Hi sweetie! Except for some leftover dregs of a cold, I'm fine. :-) Just really swamped. I hope you're doing well. I can't wait to catch up. (Any news on wbelt?)
