Character: Cristina Yang
Summary: There was a time when she laughed for no reason and painted her fingernails bright pink.
Word Count: 325
Notes: milk_and_glass stayed online to listen to me spew insanity and ridiculousness as I was writing these and then she beta'ed. Because she's awesome like that.

She hadn’t always been so fanatical. She hadn’t always been so organized and perfect, with a color-coded note system and outlines that couldn’t have been more straight if she’d used a ruler. She hadn’t always been so outwardly emotionless, so removed, so sarcastic and brash. There was a time when she laughed for no reason and painted her fingernails bright pink. There was a time when she had a teddy bear and scribbled out a wrong answer instead of finding a new piece of paper. There was a time when she ate peanut butter out of the jar with a spoon when she thought no one was looking.

She hadn’t always been so studious. She hadn’t always been so hardcore, so intense, raising her hand so fast her shoulder nearly dislocated itself once. She hadn’t always been so cold and standoffish, with a razor-sharp retort at the tip of her tongue. There was a time when she smiled and begged to stay home from school and play outside. There was a time when she hated coffee and the smell of her parents’ wine made her want to throw up and she had glow-in-the-dark stars on her ceiling. There was a time when she loved running and the only plastic furniture she owned belonged to dolls.

She hadn’t always been so logical. She hadn’t always been so factual, so scientific, so superior in her belief that medicine would solve everything. She hadn’t always been so competitive. There was a time when she was picked last in dodgeball and spent the entire game missing easy shots but couldn’t wait for the gym teacher to tell them to divide into teams. There was a time when she smiled and dunked Oreos in milk and played with her neighbor’s cat. There was a time when she thought everything was wonderful.

There was also a time when she was nine. There was also a time when her father was alive.
