When she was four, Cristina asked her mother when she’d know that she was in love. Ever the scientist, even at such a young age, she wanted to know the specifics: the feelings, the emotions, the mathematical and biological meanings and constants, exactly what goes into being in love. Her mother had laughed and tousled her daughter’s dark curls and said that she’d wake up one morning and just know. Completely dissatisfied with this answer, Cristina had pouted and demanded an extra bedtime story.

When she was nineteen, Cristina decided that her mother was wrong. About many things, actually, but most importantly about love. She had learned to question everything, to be inquisitive and demand proof and answers, to not accept anything at face value. Without proof and research and evidence, her scientific mind refused to officially know anything. She might wake up one morning and just know that she was in love but unless there was some undiscovered formula for love that could be tested and proven, she would never believe it. With that in mind, she had a lot of fun in college.

When she was twenty-seven, Cristina was thankful for her mother being wrong. Standing in his apartment with no eyebrows and wearing a dress she actually kind of hated, she searches for signs that he’s coming back. A shoe, a trumpet, a CD, a scrub cap. Something. And as Meredith comes up behind her to give her the hug she so desperately needs but wants only from him, she can’t find anything. From the moment she first woke up next to him with feelings for him beginning to grow inside of her, she thought that she might be in love. She never really knew and, with eyeliner and mascara tracking their way across her cheeks as she begs for help in getting the dress off of her, she was glad that her instincts weren’t wrong.

When she was twenty-eight, Cristina thought that her mother might not be wrong after all. She isn’t entirely sure about that, but as Owen Hunt sleeps soundly with his head on her stomach, Cristina thinks that there might be something here.
