Yes, but while I'm entering "11/04" to mean "November 2004", it's assuming that what I've entered is short for "11th April 2006", and just displaying the derived month and year. I want it to display the month and year as entered!

Would entering it as 01/11/04 force it to display the desired way, or would that cause other problems?

Well, it's more that I need people to enter the relevant accounting period into the cell, and accounting periods are broadly the current month/year minus three months. I think I've got a workaround, but I'll need to prod it tonight away from distractions.

Try MMM/YY. Then 11/04 should give Nov04.

Good thought, but it needs to show the numbers as it's not *really* the month.
TBH, I'm giving up on this one for the moment. I've been told by OfficeCrush that people persistently send in old forms, mismatched data or paperwork, and the worst offenders are the most senior managers. Also, the level of programming validation would require a quantun leap in the form's structure, which smacks of overkill. It's a pity, really - I'd worked out how to make the charge bands for personal mileage in company cars vary by year...
