I remember my mum's fridge getting so bad that we couldn't close the fridge door...

This is why all my fridges have been frost-free. Hoorah!

Looks like the top of my freezer. There's been a bottle of vodka trapped in there since Marcus (WINOLJ) brought it down for the first housewarming (the one before I had furniture other than a bookcase full of CDs and a bed). L and K have plans to Do Something About It, but first I have to eat the other contents ... oh damn, there's some ice cream ...

Actually, the fridges at work look very similar ...

Oh, the bottles that were laying down came out quite easily!
The freezer compartment was even worse, what with the door to it not staying on, unless you lined up the broken hinge sections and slotted the catch for the open end it just right. Even then, it was touch and go as to whether or not the thing would fall off the next time someone opened the main door!
I evicted a total of about 4L of ice from the fridge and its freezer compartment, and another litre or so of water. I think that some of that would have been down to the steam cleaner... The chiller plate for the fridge had ice on both sides(!)
adelpha has now gone over three areas of the flat with the Dyson, and we now fully understand what valkyriekaren means by "Dyson guilt". That much crap from just the living room? *Shudders*

Ah - this vodka bottle is sideways, across the back of the drawer ... the need for defrosting is getting more and more urgent.
And as for "Dyson guilt", I'm glad I've got a Henry ...
