Holy crap, if you want fast population growth play as Alexander and ally with all of the city states. Every maritime city-state gives me 5 food per capital and 3 food in every other city. I'm also receiving 20 culture per turn from allied cultural city-states, which means of the 180 culture per turn I'm receiving 130 of it is from city-states. And thanks to the Patronage social policy I'm receiving about 50 science points per turn from city states, and they even grant me great people every so often.
Allying with city-states is a pain in the ass normally, they don't have many missions that don't involve killing someone, but with Alexander I only lose .27 influence per turn, so I just pay 250 gold to them every 100 turns or so to keep my influence at ally levels.
Yeah, allying with city-states is a popular strategy. One extreme version I've seen of it is, since you can build Trading Posts without destroying forests, to just build TPs as almost your sole tile improvement, and use all the cash that generates to bribe city-states to give you food and just buy units outright.
